The budget tier is the one place in this category where two devices have genuinely been measured. Neither measurement is flattering, and both are more than the expensive watches can show.

The COROS PACE 4 wins on the rubric: 41 manufacturer-stated GPS hours and dual-frequency positioning at around a third of a flagship's price. The PACE 3 sits one place behind it for a reason worth knowing — it is the only watch in this price bracket that an independent tester actually measured, and its wrist heart rate lost that test.

What "budget" buys and what it does not

Everything on this page is under $300 at the prices shown, and the honest headline is that the gap between this tier and the $700 tier is much narrower than the price suggests. Two of these five watches offer dual-frequency positioning, which is the single specification that changes what a watch records. All five record heart rate from a wrist optical sensor, and so does every flagship — the expensive watches do not have a better class of heart-rate hardware, they have more features around it.

What you genuinely give up down here is maps, case materials and ecosystem depth. Those matter to some people and to nobody else. What you do not give up is the number the watch writes down.

The strange thing about the cheap end of this market

Across this entire site, exactly three devices in a watch form factor have been measured by somebody independent. Two of them are on this page, and both are cheap.

The COROS PACE 3 was tested by the5krunner in a measured 10-mile comparison against a Garmin HRM-Pro Plus and a Polar Verity Sense. Its wrist heart rate diverged during and after rapid intensity changes. The author is explicit that the dataset was limited, and we repeat that rather than bury it.

The Garmin Forerunner 55 appears by name in the 2025 Sensors placement study — 28 participants, a Polar H10 as the reference — where during the burpee protocol it showed a bias of roughly 33 bpm. That is the largest error recorded anywhere in that paper.

Two measured watches, two unflattering results. It would be easy to read that as "cheap watches are inaccurate", and it is not what the data says. It says these two were measured and the rest were not. The $750 flagship with no published measurement is not better than a watch with a bad measurement; it is unknown, which is a different and arguably worse position. Our rubric treats it that way on purpose: evidence carries 30% of the score, and being measured at all is worth something even when the number is bad.

Where the rubric actually separates these five

Endurance and cost carry 30% between them, and in this bracket that is decisive. The two COROS watches state 41 and 38 GPS hours respectively; the Forerunner 55 states 20. That is not a rounding difference — it is the difference between a watch that covers a hundred-mile attempt and one that does not cover a slow ironman.

At today's prices the PACE 4 works out at $6.07 per stated GPS hour and the PACE 3 at $5.24, against $10.00 for the Forerunner 55. Compare those with the $28.67 the Forerunner 970 costs per hour and the shape of this category becomes clear: you are not paying for recording time up here, you are paying for everything around it.

Why the Suunto is third and not first

The Suunto Race S is the best-specified watch on this page. Dual-frequency GNSS, a large AMOLED, 95+ sport modes, and it undercuts every mid-range Garmin with the same receiver class. On hardware alone it would win.

It ranks third because we could find no independent validation of any kind for it — not a peer-reviewed study, not a measured enthusiast test, nothing. Under our evidence hierarchy that caps how high a device can rank no matter how good its specification is, and this is the clearest example on the site of that rule costing a good product places. You can see exactly which sub-score did it, which is the entire point of publishing the sub-scores.

The single-band problem, stated plainly

Two watches here — the Forerunner 165 and the Forerunner 55 — do not offer multi-band positioning. Garmin's own specification table for the 55 lists one GPS-mode battery figure and no all-systems multi-band row, which is exactly what you would expect from a receiver that does not have the mode.

That matters in one specific situation and no others: dense cities and heavy tree cover, where a single-frequency receiver cannot easily tell a signal that arrived directly from one that bounced off a building on the way. If your tracks wander there, a cheaper single-band watch is the wrong purchase and the GPS upgrade path explains what to buy instead. If you run on open roads and trails, you will never see the difference and you should keep the money.

If your complaint is heart rate, buy something else entirely

Every watch on this page reads heart rate from a moving wrist joint. So does every watch costing four times as much. The 2025 placement study made this unusually clear by running three identical Whoop sensors at wrist, forearm and upper arm simultaneously: the proximal placements won at every intensity tested, with the same hardware. The variable was position, not brand and not price.

A chest strap costs about a hundred dollars, works with any watch on this page, and fixes the actual problem. We would rather send you to a $105 strap than sell you a $250 watch that will disappoint you for the same reason your current one does.

That test was of the PACE 3, not the PACE 4, and the author cautions the dataset was limited. COROS states the PACE 4 has a redesigned sensor; no independent test of the new sensor has been published that we could find.

How to choose between these five

Start with how long your longest session is

This is the question that actually sorts this page. Under three hours and every watch here is fine, so buy on screen and ecosystem. Over eight hours and the two COROS watches are the only sensible answers, because 38-41 stated hours versus 20 is a difference you will meet in the real world rather than on a spec sheet.

Then decide whether you run in a city

If your route is between tall buildings or under continuous canopy, spend the extra on a dual-frequency receiver — the PACE 4, the PACE 3 or the Race S. If it is not, single-band is genuinely fine and the money is better spent on a strap.

Screen technology is a real trade, not marketing

The PACE 3 uses a transflective display, which is reflective: it uses ambient light, so it gets more readable as the sun gets brighter, exactly when an AMOLED starts washing out. Indoors it looks flat next to the AMOLED watches here. Neither is obsolete and neither is better in general; they are better in different places.

Check which battery number you are reading

Every figure on this page is labeled with the mode it refers to, because manufacturers publish several per watch and they can differ by close to a factor of two. COROS states 38 hours of "full GPS" for the PACE 3 and 41 in "All-Systems" mode for the PACE 4; Garmin states 20 hours of "GPS mode" for the 55. Comparing an all-systems figure against a GPS-only figure is comparing two different tests.

Do not buy the year on the box

The PACE 3 is the previous generation and it is on this page above two newer watches. In a category that refreshes annually, "current" is a marketing status, not a measurement — and in this specific case the older watch is the one with evidence attached to it.

What is the best running watch under $200?

On our rubric, the COROS PACE 3 — 38 manufacturer-stated hours of full GPS, a dual-frequency option and a transflective screen, in a 29-gram watch. The caveat we publish with it is that it is also the only watch at this price an independent tester has measured, and its wrist heart rate diverged during intervals in that test. If you train by heart rate, budget for a strap on top.

Is a cheap running watch less accurate than an expensive one?

For heart rate, there is no published evidence that it is — every watch in both tiers uses wrist optical sensing, and the 2025 placement study found sensor position mattered far more than the device. For positioning, price does buy something specific and checkable: multi-band reception, which measurably reduces reflected-signal error in cities and forests. That specification appears on watches from about $200 upward, so the line is not where people assume.

Do budget running watches have multi-band GPS?

Some do. The COROS PACE 4 and PACE 3 both offer a dual-frequency mode, and so does the Suunto Race S. The Garmin Forerunner 165 and Forerunner 55 do not — Garmin's own battery table for the 55 lists a single GPS-mode figure with no all-systems multi-band row, which is what a receiver without the mode looks like on a spec sheet.

Is the Forerunner 55 still worth buying?

As a first Garmin, yes — it is the cheapest way into Garmin Connect and it states 14 days of smartwatch battery, which means it is on your wrist at night rather than on a charger. As a training instrument, be aware it is the device the 2025 placement study caught at roughly 33 bpm of bias during explosive work, the largest error in that paper. That is a reason to pair a strap, not necessarily a reason to avoid the watch.
