Who we are
About Pulse & Path
An independent publisher ranking training wearables by the quality of their data. No lab, no review units, and no pretense about either.

What this site is
Pulse & Path ranks GPS watches, heart-rate sensors and sleep trackers by the quality of the data they produce — not by feature counts, and not by how the marketing describes them.
The name is meant literally. Pulse is the physiological signal: heart rate, HRV, recovery. Path is the spatial one: GPS, route, distance. Those are the two measurements this site judges devices on, so the name is a description of the method rather than decoration.
We write for someone who already owns a decent watch and is irritated by one specific number on it. Not "what is a fitness tracker" — more like "why does my heart rate read 150 during an easy warm-up, and what do I buy instead".
Who writes it
Stephen V., editor, pulse & path.
I'm an enthusiast who's genuinely into this — I read the manuals, compile the published specs, and do the math. No lab coat. I haven't worn every device on this site, and I'll never pretend I have. What I do instead is read the validation research, put the numbers side by side, and show my working so you can check it.
You will not find a certification after my name, because I do not hold one. You will not find "20 years of testing" or "our expert panel", because neither exists. Those claims are easy to make and easy to falsify, and a site whose entire pitch is "check our work" cannot afford one that does not survive checking.
What we do instead of testing
The competitive field here leads with exactly what we lack: five-person product teams, branded sleep labs, certified running coaches, twenty years of hands-on reviews. Imitating any of that would be a lie, and the least defensible kind — the sort a competitor or a Google quality rater can disprove in an afternoon.
So we compete on the one thing that needs no lab: a method you can reproduce.
| Instead of… | We publish… |
|---|---|
| "We tested 40 watches" | "We compiled the published specs for 40 watches, and here is the table" |
| "In our testing, heart rate was accurate" | "This study, n = 28, measured this result — here is the link" |
| "Battery lasted us 12 days" | "The manufacturer states 26 GPS hours, which at today's price is $X per hour" |
| A star rating from feel | A score from a published rubric, with every input shown |
The arithmetic is the part nobody else is doing, and it needs no hardware: cost per GPS hour, the true three-year cost of a subscription wearable, sensor-generation deltas across a brand's line. It is verifiable, and it is genuinely useful.
The numbers, as they stand
- 26 devices ranked
- 8 with peer-reviewed evidence behind their headline measurement
- 6 ranked while we state outright that no validation study exists for them
- 0 devices we claim to have tested
That third number is the one we are most attached to. Publishing a ranking while saying "nobody has ever measured this" is unusual, and it is the honest description of most of this market.
What we will never do
- Claim to have tested, worn or owned a device we have not
- Invent or imply a credential — no coach, no clinician, no expert panel
- Publish a price we have not verified through the retailer's API in the last 48 hours
- Fabricate a review, a rating or a testimonial. There are none on this site, because we have none
- Quote a figure from a paper we could not read
- Let a commission decide a ranking
How this is paid for
Affiliate commission, primarily through the Amazon Associates program. When you buy through a link here we earn a percentage, at no extra cost to you. No sponsored posts, no paid placements, no free units, and no manufacturer preview access.
The reason you can check that commission does not drive rankings — rather than simply believe it — is that the rubric and its weights are published. Full details on the affiliate disclosure page.
Who publishes it
Pulse & Path is published by Type 5 Marketing LLC, an independent company that operates a portfolio of specialist review sites. It is not owned by, funded by or affiliated with any wearable manufacturer or retailer.

If something here is wrong, we would genuinely like to know— the contact form leads with "report an error" because a site that asks to be corrected is making a claim it has to back. Corrections are logged visibly on the page rather than edited in silently.
