Heart rate accuracy, device by device
A short table of what has been measured, and a longer one of what has not. Both are useful; only one of them usually gets published.

The short answer
Only two devices in our roundups appear by name in a peer-reviewed heart-rate accuracy study: the Polar H10 (as the reference standard) and the Polar Verity Sense (bias under 0.1 bpm on a graded treadmill test). Every other heart-rate device we cover has no independent validation that we could find.
How to read this table
The rows saying "no validation study exists that we could find" are not filler. They are the finding. In a category where every product page asserts accuracy, the fact that most devices have never been independently measured is the single most useful thing a buyer can know.
Note the careful phrasing: that we could find. We searched, and we may have missed something. If you know of a study we have not listed, tell us and we will add it— the contact form leads with "report an error" for exactly this reason.
The one asymmetry worth noticing
Polar devices appear in the peer-reviewed record repeatedly, and other brands barely appear at all. Two honest readings of that, and we do not know which is right:
Researchers choose Polar hardware for validation work, which suggests genuine confidence in it. That is a real signal.
But it may also be partly circular. Polar has courted the research market for decades, so its devices are in labs, so they end up in studies, so they accumulate citations. A brand being absent from the literature is not evidence that its sensors are worse — it may just not be the kit that happens to be in the lab.
Our rubric can only score what exists, so Polar benefits. We would rather flag the possible circularity than let a scoring artefact look like a physical fact.
Manufacturer-spec is not the same as no-evidence
You will notice the Garmin and Wahoo straps sit at manufacturer specification rather than none, while the COOSPO sits at none. The distinction is deliberate: all are electrical chest straps using the same physical principle as the validated H10, but the major brands publish detailed specifications and have documented engineering behind the measurement chain. That is worth something — just considerably less than a measurement.

Which heart rate monitor has the best evidence behind it?
The Polar H10, which published studies use as their reference standard. Among devices that were measured rather than used as the yardstick, the Polar Verity Sense armband recorded the best result — a bias under 0.1 bpm on a graded treadmill protocol.
Has Garmin's wrist heart rate been independently tested?
Only a Forerunner 55 in the 2025 placement study, where it showed a bias of around 33 bpm during burpees — and that is an old, entry-level model. No current Garmin watch has an independent validation that we could find.
Does no validation mean a device is inaccurate?
No. It means nobody has checked. A device with no evidence might be excellent — the point is that neither you nor we can know, and a ranking that pretends otherwise is making it up. That is why absence of evidence caps how high a device can rank on accuracy here rather than condemning it outright.
