The score beside each one comes from one published rubric applied to every product we cover, and the evidence chip tells you whether anyone has actually measured the device against a reference. We have not worn any of them, and we do not claim to. What we do is read the validation research, compile the manufacturers' own specifications, and show the arithmetic.

First decide which kind of gift this is

Two hundred and fifty dollars is the first bracket where you can buy a complete GPS running watch rather than an add-on, and that changes the question. If the recipient does not own a running watch — they run with a phone, or with a general smartwatch that dies after a long run — then a watch is the gift, and the first two picks are the ones to look at. If they do own one, a second watch is a strange present, and the money is better spent on the strap, the recovery band or the sleep sensor further down.

There is one more thing to know before you spend anything in this bracket: one of the picks is not a product but a membership. It is listed honestly as what it is, and the three-year cost is computed on the page so you can see what you are really signing them up for.

The picks, in gifter language

Best complete watch under $250: COROS PACE 4

The PACE 4 has the two things that separate a serious running watch from a smartwatch that runs: dual-frequency satellite reception, which is the hardware that stops GPS tracks wandering between buildings and under trees, and a manufacturer-stated 41 hours of GPS recording — more than either flagship Garmin Forerunner states, and by a wide margin. It weighs 32 grams. It is under $250 today, which works out at $6.07 per stated GPS hour. What to check: it is a COROS, not a Garmin, so if the recipient is deeply invested in the Garmin app ecosystem (badges, Connect, their whole training history), ask before switching them. The same idea for less: COROS PACE 3

The previous PACE, now sold alongside the PACE 4 at a lower price that COROS made permanent when the 4 launched. It gives up the newer sensor and some of the endurance but keeps the dual-frequency option, and it is under $250 today. It is also the one watch in this bracket that has an independent heart-rate test behind it — and the result was unfavorable, which is why the ranking says what it says and why we recommend a strap alongside any watch. The two are compared directly on PACE 3 vs PACE 4.

For a Garmin owner who has everything: Garmin HRM 600

If they wear a Garmin and already own a basic strap, the HRM 600 is the one above it: it adds running dynamics, stores data on its own, and is Garmin's current premium sensor. It is under $250 today. This is the gift for the person who talks about "ground contact time" at dinner. Everyone else should buy the under-$100 strap and save the difference.

The membership, listed as a membership: WHOOP Peak (12 months)

WHOOP is a screenless recovery band, and the Amazon listing is a twelve-month membership with the hardware included. That makes it an unusually honest listing — the price is genuinely what a year costs — and an unusual gift, because after your twelve months the recipient is billed monthly or the band stops working. Over three years that is $717 at today's membership price, and the listing is under $250 today. Buy it for someone who has said they want one. Do not buy it for someone who would rather own their tracker.

Sleep data without wearing a watch to bed: Garmin Index Sleep Monitor

An upper-arm band worn only overnight that gives a Garmin user sleep staging, pulse oximetry and skin temperature without a watch on the wrist in bed. It is under $250 today. It lives in Garmin Connect, so this is a Garmin-owner gift; and no independent study of it exists yet, which its evidence chip says.

The Garmin under $250: Forerunner 165

If the recipient is a beginner runner who wants a Garmin specifically, the Forerunner 165 is the one Garmin sells in this bracket, and it is under $250 today. It ranks last here for a checkable reason: it is single-band, which means it has the older, less accurate satellite reception, and that cannot be fixed with a software update. For a first watch it is fine. For someone who already complains about their GPS, it is the wrong gift — see why.

What to check before you order

  • Which app do they use? Garmin Connect, COROS, Polar Flow and Apple Health are different worlds, and a watch that moves them out of their history is a gift with a cost. When in doubt, buy the strap or the sleep sensor — those add to whatever they have.
  • Wrist size. The PACE 4 and PACE 3 are small, light watches and suit smaller wrists; the Forerunner 165 is similar. None of these is a large watch.
  • Subscription. Only the WHOOP membership bills after purchase. Every other pick here is bought once.

That test was of the PACE 3, not the PACE 4, and the author cautions the dataset was limited. The5krunner's measured 10-mile comparison tested THIS watch — not a sibling, not a predecessor — against a Garmin HRM-Pro Plus and a Polar Verity Sense, and found its wrist heart rate diverged during and after rapid intensity change. Sensors (2025) tested three Whoop 4.0 units simultaneously at wrist, forearm and upper arm against a Polar H10. Upper-arm placement produced the lowest error at warm-up and the best agreement in the burpee protocol; the wrist unit showed limits of ±10-19 bpm at warm-up. That was the 4.0, not the current model.

Is a $250 running watch good enough for a serious runner?

On our rubric the COROS PACE 4 outscores several watches costing far more, because it has dual-frequency positioning and long stated endurance and the rubric does not reward a price tag. What it lacks is maps and a big screen. Whether that matters depends on the recipient, not on how serious they are.

Should I buy a Garmin or a COROS as a gift?

Buy whichever brand they already use, if they use one — switching apps costs them their training history. If they have neither, the PACE 4 is the better watch in this bracket on the evidence and the specification sheet, and it is what we would buy.

Does the WHOOP gift keep costing money?

Yes. The listing covers twelve months; after that the recipient pays the membership or the band stops working. The three-year figure on this page adds 24 months at the published monthly rate to today's listing price.

What if the recipient already owns a running watch?

Do not buy them another one. In this bracket the HRM 600 strap or the Index Sleep Monitor adds something their watch cannot do on its own; under $100, a Polar H10 does the same for less.
