The short answer

The Forerunner 970 is the most complete watch Garmin currently sells for running: multi-band GNSS with SatIQ, built-in maps, an ECG app, and a manufacturer-stated 26 hours of GPS recording. At today's price that is $28.85 per GPS hour — better than the cheaper Forerunner 570. What it does not buy is a better heart-rate signal.

What the specification actually gives you

Garmin publishes the following for the 970: a 47 mm case with a titanium bezel, an AMOLED display, multi-band GNSS with SatIQ, built-in full-color maps, an ECG app, a speaker and microphone, and battery life of up to 15 days in smartwatch mode or 26 hours in GPS mode.

Multi-band is the specification that matters most and is the easiest to under-explain. A single-frequency receiver cannot easily tell a signal that came straight down from one that bounced off a building on the way, so in cities and under tree cover it produces the wandering tracks people complain about. A dual-frequency receiver hears the same satellite on two frequencies, and the disagreement between them is the clue that identifies the reflection. SatIQ is Garmin's layer on top, switching modes automatically to trade accuracy against battery.

The arithmetic that makes it interesting

The 970 is the expensive watch in the range, and the reflex is to treat the 570 as the value option. Divide by stated endurance and that reverses. 26 GPS hours at the current live price is $28.85an hour; the 570's 18 hours works out at $30.55.

Whether that matters is entirely a question about you. If your longest session is ninety minutes, the extra hours are worth nothing and the cheaper watch wins. If you race ultra-distance, they are the whole point. We show the arithmetic rather than the verdict because only one of us knows how long you run.

What we could not verify

This section appears on every review on this site, and on this watch it is substantial.

  • Heart-rate accuracy.No independent validation of the Forerunner 970's optical sensor has been published that we could find. Garmin's sensor is current-generation and the specification is detailed, but a specification is not a measurement.
  • GPS accuracy in the field. The best peer-reviewed distance study we found is from 2020 and tested a Forerunner 935 and a fēnix 5X Plus — single-band watches, two generations back. It cannot tell you how the 970 performs.
  • Real battery life.The 26-hour figure is Garmin's, under Garmin's assumptions. We have not run one down and are not going to imply otherwise.
  • The ECG app's clinical performance. It carries regulatory clearance in the markets where it is enabled; we have not reviewed the underlying submission data and make no claim about it.

That is a lot of unknowns for a $750 watch, and it is not unique to Garmin — it is the state of the entire category. The evidence scoreboard lays out how thin the published record is across every brand here.

Who should not buy it

Anyone whose actual complaint is heart rate. The 970's optical sensor is the same class of hardware as the 570's and every other wrist device, and the published evidence on wrist optical sensing during intensity changes is consistently poor across all brands. The fix is a strap, not a more expensive watch.

Also anyone who wants a smaller case. The 970 is 47 mm only; the 570 comes in 42 mm as well.

Does the Forerunner 970 have maps?

Yes — built-in full-color maps, and this is the main functional difference from the Forerunner 570, which has none at any price. If you navigate unfamiliar routes it is the reason to choose the 970.

How long does the Forerunner 970 battery last?

Garmin states up to 15 days in smartwatch mode and up to 26 hours in GPS mode. Those are manufacturer figures under manufacturer assumptions — we have not measured one. Note that endurance figures vary considerably by satellite mode, so check which mode any figure refers to before comparing across brands.

Is the Forerunner 970's heart rate accurate?

Nobody has published an independent measurement that we could find, so we cannot tell you — and neither can anyone else who has not measured it. What the wider literature shows is that wrist optical sensing in general degrades during rapid intensity changes regardless of brand. If heart rate matters to your training, pair a chest strap.
