The short answer
Buy the Oura Ring 4. It is the generation covered by the HRV study that measured five wearables against an ECG across 536 nights, and its predecessor holds the best published sleep result in the category. If the membership is the objection, the RingConn Gen 2 has no subscription at all — and no validation either.

Why rings, and why this ranking looks odd
The case for a ring is compliance, not physics. A ring is small enough that people actually wear it every night, and a sleep tracker that spends the night on a bedside table measures nothing at all. Finger placement also sits in tissue with strong perfusion, which is a reasonable place to read a pulse from.
The ranking below puts the Ring 4 above the newer Ring 5, which almost no other site will do. The reason is our published rubric: evidence is 30% of the score, and the Ring 5 has none of its own. Newer hardware does not inherit an older ring's paper.

Read that table twice, because it is the whole category in one picture: one product line has been examined by researchers, and everything else is asking you to take the sleep graph on trust.
The subscription arithmetic
Oura publishes $5.99 per month or $69.99 per year with the first month free. Over three years the Ring 4 works out to $559, against $299 for a RingConn Gen 2 with no membership at all. On a three-year view, the subscription is a bigger number than the hardware.
That is a genuine trade rather than an obvious win either way. You are choosing between measured accuracy with a recurring fee, and an unmeasured sleep graph you own outright. Our Oura versus RingConn comparison works through it in detail.
Sizing, which is the practical failure mode
Every ring here is sold per size, and the listing you buy is size-specific. Fingers change size through the day and with temperature, and a ring that is loose reads badly for the same reason a loose watch does — optical sensing needs consistent contact. Order a sizing kit before the ring if the maker offers one, and size for your usual evening state rather than a cold morning.
The other practical note: rings do not record workouts in any useful sense. They have no GPS, no display and no pace. If you want one device for training and sleep, you want a watch, and you should read what has been measured about watch sleep staging first — which is almost nothing.
Battery, charging and the compliance problem
Every ring here runs for days rather than hours, which is the specification that makes the form factor work: the charge can happen while you shower, so the ring is on your finger at the only time it needs to be. A device that charges overnight measures nothing overnight, which is why battery matters more for sleep tracking than sensor specifications do.
The practical failure mode is not the battery, it is the charger. A ring charger is small, proprietary and easy to leave behind. Buy a spare if you travel, and keep one at work — the data set you want is continuous, and one missed week is a hole in a trend line you cannot backfill.
How to check your own ring at home
You cannot validate sleep staging without a laboratory, but you can validate the number that matters most:
- Log your actual bedtime and wake time for a week, by hand, and compare to what the app reports. Sleep and wake detection is the strongest thing these devices do — 91-93% agreement across the three devices measured against polysomnography — so if your ring is wrong here, something is wrong with fit or wear.
- Note the nights you woke and stayed awake. Wake-after-sleep-onset is where consumer devices historically struggle most, and you are the only reference available.
- Ignore the stage bars for single nights.Four-stage classification ran 70.9-76.3% in the study, on healthy adults in a laboratory. A weekly pattern is meaningful; Tuesday's deep-sleep figure is not.

Skip this if you lift heavily. A rigid ring on a loaded barbell is uncomfortable at best, and Oura's own guidance is to take it off — a tracker you remove for training is not tracking your training.

How to read any ring's sleep graph
Even the best-measured device in this category got roughly three-quarters of four-stage classification right in a laboratory, on healthy adults, for one night. That is genuinely good for a consumer device and it is nowhere near a clinical result.
- Trust the totals more than the stages.Sleep and wake detection reached 91-93% agreement across the three devices in the polysomnography study; four-stage classification ran 70.9-76.3%. Time asleep is a much stronger number than "deep sleep".
- Use trends, not nights.Any single night's stage breakdown carries the device's error plus your own night-to-night variability. A week of data says something; Tuesday does not.
- Watch what the score is built from.Readiness and recovery scores are manufacturer models, and no manufacturer's readiness model has been independently validated that we could find, from any brand.

Which smart ring is the most accurate?
On published evidence, Oura — but note which generations. An Oura Gen3 was measured against clinical polysomnography (76.3% four-stage agreement, 79.5% deep-sleep sensitivity) and an Oura Gen 4 against an ECG for HRV (5.96% error, best of five devices). No other ring we cover has been independently validated at all.
Is a smart ring better than a watch for sleep?
For being worn all night, almost always. For measured accuracy, the ring is the only form factor with a strong published result — no Garmin sleep-staging validation exists that we could find, and the Apple platform's published deep-sleep sensitivity was 50.5%.
Do smart rings need a subscription?
Oura's does for the full app, at a published $5.99 per month. RingConn's does not. Over three years that difference is larger than the price of the hardware, which is why we compute a three-year cost for every subscription device on this site.
Can a smart ring track workouts?
Not usefully. No GPS, no display, no pace. Rings are recovery instruments worn alongside a watch, and any brand implying otherwise is overselling. See our running watch ranking for the training half of that setup.
