Over three years a membership costs more than the hardware. Here is what you can buy outright, and what you give up by refusing to rent.

The honest cost of avoiding subscriptions is evidence — the two devices with the strongest published sleep results both charge one, and no device on this page has been independently validated.

The subscription is the real price

In this category the sticker is not the cost. A membership at around twenty dollars a month adds well over seven hundred dollars across three years, which is more than any piece of hardware on this page.

Two devices we cover elsewhere make this concrete. A WHOOP listing is itself a 12-month membership, so its true three-year figure is $717. The RingConn Gen 2 on this page charges nothing beyond the hardware: $299. Same three years, wildly different money — and only one of those numbers appears on a product page anywhere.

There is a second cost people discover later. A subscription device stops working when you stop paying. That is a genuinely different proposition from owning a watch, and it deserves more weight than it usually gets in a comparison table.

What you give up, stated honestly

We are not going to pretend this is a free choice. The strongest published sleep evidence in the category belongs to devices that charge a subscription.

In the Brigham and Women's polysomnography study, the Oura Ring achieved the highest four-stage agreement of the three devices tested — 76.3% with a deep-sleep sensitivity of 79.5% — and Oura requires a membership for the full app. In the 536-night HRV validation, Oura again led on measured accuracy with WHOOP second.

Meanwhile, of the five devices on this page: one has a peer-reviewed result and it is an unflattering one, and four have no independent validation at all. That is the trade. It is not "subscriptions are a rip-off"; it is "the measured devices are the ones that charge".

Why Garmin wins a page it has never been measured on

The Venu 3 ranks first here on a combination of coverage, endurance and cost — not evidence, where it scores 4.5.

Its practical argument is genuinely strong though. The most common failure of sleep tracking on a sports watch is not accuracy; it is that the watch is on the charger at bedtime. Fourteen stated days makes that stop happening. And it is one device rather than a watch plus a ring, which is the setup a lot of people quietly end up with.

The evidence position is worth stating plainly: no independent validation of Garmin's sleep staging exists that we could find, and Garmin was absent from the Robbins comparison entirely. So there is no published head-to-head against Oura, Fitbit or Apple. That is a gap, not a pass.

The Fitbit is here because it was measured

The Charge 6 is the only device on this page with any peer-reviewed data behind its platform, and the data is not kind: in the same PSG study a Fitbit Sense 2 recorded 70.9% four-stage agreement and 61.7% deep-sleep sensitivity — the weakest of the three devices tested — overestimating light sleep by 18 minutes and underestimating deep sleep by 15.

We rank it second anyway, because "measured and mediocre" is a better evidentiary position than "never measured", and because it is by some distance the cheapest device here. Note the honest caveat: Fitbit Premium is optional rather than mandatory, but some analysis does sit behind it. Sleep stages themselves do not.

Two devices that solve compliance instead of accuracy

The Garmin Index Sleep Monitor and the Withings mat are unusual, and both are here for the same underrated reason: the best sleep tracker is the one that is actually on you.

The Index band is worn on the upper arm overnight only — which is the placement the 2025 placement study measured as superior to the wrist for heart rate. That principle is peer-reviewed; this device's sleep staging is not, and we do not let the first stand in for the second.

The Withings mat goes under the mattress and requires nothing of you at all. It cannot be forgotten, cannot be uncharged, and measures every single night. Its measurement principle — inferring heart rate through a mattress — is the most indirect on this site, and it cannot separate you from a restless partner or a dog.

A note on what "no subscription" should mean

Check two things before you trust the phrase. First, whether the sleep stages themselves are free or whether only a summary is. Second, whether the company has a history of moving features behind a paywall after launch — a promise about next year's pricing is not a specification, and no page including this one can verify it for you.

Robbins et al., Sensors 24(20):6532 (2024) tested the Fitbit Sense 2 — not the Charge 6 — against polysomnography: 70.9% four-stage agreement (κ = 0.55) and 61.7% deep-sleep sensitivity, the weakest of the three devices. Fitbit's staging algorithm is shared across the line, but this remains evidence about a different device.

How to choose

Work out the three-year number before anything else

Hardware plus thirty-six months of whatever the membership costs. Do it for the subscription device you were considering too, then compare. It reframes the entire decision and it takes ten seconds.

Solve compliance first, accuracy second

A validated device you take off at night measures nothing; an unvalidated one you always wear produces a real baseline. If you know you will not sleep in a watch, buy the mat or the arm band and stop agonizing over sleep-stage agreement percentages.

Be clear about what you want from it

Sleep duration and timing are things consumer devices do well. Sleep staging — light, deep, REM — is where agreement with clinical polysomnography ranges from 70.9% to 76.3% even in the best-measured devices, and none of these five is among them. If the four-stage graph is the reason you are buying, the honest answer is on the accuracy ranking, and it costs a subscription.

Battery is a sleep feature

Anything you charge nightly will eventually be charging at bedtime. Fourteen stated days on the Venu 3, multi-night on the ring and the arm band, and mains power on the mat — those are all answers to the same problem.

Does the Oura Ring require a subscription?

Oura requires a membership for the full app experience, which is why it is not on this page despite having the strongest published sleep result in the category — 76.3% four-stage agreement against clinical polysomnography. If measured staging accuracy is your priority rather than avoiding a subscription, that is the trade you are making.

Is Fitbit Premium required for sleep tracking?

Sleep stages themselves are not behind Premium, though some deeper analysis is. That is why the Charge 6 qualifies for this page. Its published result is the honest problem: a Fitbit Sense 2 recorded the weakest four-stage agreement of three devices in the 2024 PSG study, at 70.9%.
