Understand what you are buying — no Garmin sleep-staging validation exists that we could find, and the only peer-reviewed measurement of a watch platform here is Apple's, at 50.5% deep-sleep sensitivity.

Start with the uncomfortable part
Only three consumer devices have a published head-to-head against clinical polysomnography in the study we cite most: an Oura Ring Gen3, a Fitbit Sense 2 and an Apple Watch Series 8. Two of those are not watches, and the one that is came last on deep sleep — 50.5% sensitivity, overestimating light sleep by 45 minutes and underestimating deep sleep by 43.
For Garmin and Polar sleep staging there is no published validation at all that we could find. Their sleep graphs may well be good. Nobody outside those companies has checked, and a graph nobody has checked is exactly what this site exists to label.
So why rank watches for sleep at all?
Because the alternative for most people is not a validated device — it is nothing. A watch you already own and already wear produces the two numbers that hold up best across every study we have read: when you fell asleep and how long you slept. Sleep-and-wake detection reached 91-93% agreement across the three devices tested against polysomnography, while four-stage classification ran 70.9-76.3%.
Bedtime, wake time and total sleep are useful and reasonably solid. The colored stage bars are the part to hold loosely.

Note the strange shape of that table. The only watch with a published measurement is the one whose measurement was unflattering — and it is ranked here anyway, with the number printed, because the alternative is rewarding the brands that have never been tested.
Battery is the real constraint
A watch that needs charging daily gets charged overnight, which is when you need it on your wrist. That single practical fact is why the Apple Watch is the hardest of these to use for sleep despite having the most published evidence: Apple states 42 hours of normal use for the Ultra 3, so the charging window has to come out of your waking day.
Garmin and Polar watches at this level run for many days, which means the charge can happen while you shower. If you are choosing a watch specifically for sleep, that is a more important specification than the sensor list.
What actually improves your sleep data
- Wear it every night, snug. Consistency beats hardware — a device worn four nights a week produces a trend line with holes in it.
- Judge totals, not stages. Time asleep is the number with the strongest evidence behind it across every device.

The three ways watch sleep data actually fails
- It is not on your wrist. The most common failure by a distance. A watch that charges at bedtime records nothing, which is why battery life is the first specification to check for this job.
- It is worn too loosely.Optical sensing needs consistent skin contact. Manufacturers publish a fit instruction — Garmin's is that the watch should not move while you exercise — and the same physics applies at night.
- The stages are read as measurements. They are model outputs. Four-stage classification reached 70.9-76.3% against polysomnography in the one study with three consumer devices in it, and deep-sleep sensitivity ranged from 79.5% down to 50.5%.
What we would want measured next
A polysomnography validation of Garmin or Polar sleep staging on a current watch. It does not exist, and its absence is doing a lot of quiet work in this category: two of the largest sports-watch brands ship a nightly four-stage graph that no independent group has ever checked, and the marketing around it is confident in a way the evidence cannot support.
If that study appears, this page changes. Until it does, the honest ranking uses what has been measured — which is why an unflattering Apple result still counts for more here than a brand that has never been tested at all.

Which watch tracks sleep most accurately?
No watch has a strong published result. The only peer-reviewed watch measurement in the study we cite is an Apple Watch Series 8, which reached 75.0% four-stage agreement but only 50.5% deep-sleep sensitivity. Garmin and Polar sleep staging have no published validation that we could find.
Is a Garmin good for sleep tracking?
It is comfortable, subscription-free and consistent, which are real advantages. Whether its staging is accurate is unknown — we found no independent validation of Garmin sleep staging from any research group. Treat total sleep time as reliable and the stage breakdown as an estimate.
Should I wear my watch to bed?
If it is comfortable enough that you will do it every night, yes — consistency is worth more than sensor specifications. If it is a 49mm titanium case, probably not, and a ring is the better instrument.
Do sleep scores mean anything?
They are manufacturer models, and no manufacturer's sleep or readiness score has been independently validated that we could find. Use them as a rough daily summary of inputs you can already see — duration, wake events, resting heart rate — rather than as a measurement in their own right.
