Buy the Polar H10. It broadcasts on ANT+ and Bluetooth, so a Garmin watch takes it natively, and it is the sensor researchers use as the reference standard in the studies this site cites. Buy a Garmin strap instead only if you want running dynamics, which Garmin's own manual says require an ANT+ connection.

The two questions that decide this, in order
Garmin watches accept both ANT+ and Bluetooth, which means almost every heart rate sensor on the market will pair with yours. That is a wider shortlist than an Apple Watch owner gets, and a wider shortlist is harder to choose from, not easier. Two questions cut it down.
First: do you want running dynamics?If the answer is no — and for most people it honestly is — then brand does not matter and you should buy on measured accuracy. That is the Polar H10, and it is not close. If the answer is yes, the shortlist collapses to Garmin's own sensors, because those metrics are computed by an accelerometer inside the strap and delivered to the watch over a Garmin-specific channel.
Second: will you actually wear a chest strap? A strap in a drawer measures nothing. If you know you will not wear one, the honest recommendation is an armband — and the armband here has better published numbers than any wrist sensor Garmin has shipped.
Everything below follows from those two questions. Prices are shown live and are not part of the argument; the ranking comes from the same rubric applied everywhere on this site.
Why an external sensor at all, on a watch this good
Because of where the sensor sits, not whose name is on it. In a 2025 study, 28 participants wore sensors simultaneously at wrist, forearm and upper arm against a Polar H10 chest strap through rest, a cycling warm-up, burpees and a modified Bruce treadmill protocol. The proximal placements beat the wrist at every intensity tested.
The wrist device in that study was a Garmin Forerunner 55, and during the burpee protocol it recorded a bias of roughly 33 bpm — the largest error of anything measured. That is not a lag you can wait out. It is a systematic error big enough to put you in the wrong training zone for a whole session, and it is a physics problem: tendon movement, motion artifact and changing blood flow at the wrist. No firmware update fixes it, on any brand.
This is the cheapest genuinely large upgrade available to a Garmin owner. It costs a fraction of a new watch, it works with the watch you already have, and the published evidence behind it is stronger than the evidence behind any watch on this site.
Running dynamics: the one thing only a Garmin sensor gives you
Garmin's straps carry an accelerometer that measures torso movement and computes six running metrics: cadence, vertical oscillation, ground contact time, ground contact time balance, stride length and vertical ratio. A watch cannot calculate most of them, because a watch is on your wrist and these describe what your torso is doing.
There is a connection detail that catches people out, and it comes straight from Garmin's own manual: “To use the running dynamics features, the heart rate monitor must be paired to your compatible Garmin device using ANT+ technology.” Pair the same strap over Bluetooth and the heart rate arrives, the running dynamics do not. If you bought a Garmin strap for the extra metrics and cannot find them, that is almost always why.
Whether the metrics are worth paying for is a separate question, and we will not pretend it is settled. No manufacturer has published a validation of any running-dynamics figure that we could find, which makes comparing your ground contact time to another runner's meaningless. Compared against your own baseline over months, they are useful. Most people look at them twice.

Every figure above is manufacturer-stated and labeled as such. Where a maker does not publish a number we could read directly, the cell says so rather than guessing. That is the same rule the whole site runs on, and it is why two cells in this table are empty of numbers instead of full of plausible ones.
Two picks tie, and the tie is the useful part
The HRM 200 and the HRM-Fit both come out at 7.2 on our rubric, from opposite directions. The HRM 200 is the cheapest electrical strap Garmin makes and does one job well. The HRM-Fit costs more and adds running dynamics, stored heart rate for timed activities and stand-alone step, calorie and all-day heart rate tracking — but it is rated 3 ATM where Garmin's chest straps are 5 ATM, and it only fits people who train in a medium- or high-support sports bra.
A rubric that produces a tie there is behaving correctly. Which of the two is right for you is a fit question, not a score question, and no amount of weighting should be able to answer it on your behalf.
Fitting the clip-on, because it is fussier than a strap
The HRM-Fit clips to the band of a sports bra rather than going round your ribs, and Garmin publishes an unusually specific fitting standard for it: medium or high support, tight compression, a flat band roughly 19 to 50 mm wide, and no zipper or embellishment on the front that could foul the clips. Two fingers should fit snugly under the band and you should not be able to pull it away easily.
Read that list before you buy rather than after. A band that is too wide sits the sensor too low on the torso for a reliable reading; a band that is too narrow does not give the clips enough material to hold. This is the one pick on the page where the wrong wardrobe makes the device simply not work.
The Garmin sensor that is not on this list
The HRM-Pro Plus is the strap most Garmin owners have heard of, and it is still being sold. It is not ranked here, for two reasons, both checkable.
Garmin's own current heart rate monitor guide presents three straps — the HRM 200, the HRM-Fit and the HRM 600 — and the HRM-Pro Plus is not among them. Garmin has moved the premium slot to the HRM 600, which adds step speed loss to the same six running metrics. And when we resolved a live Amazon listing for the HRM-Pro Plus on 26 August 2026, it sat above Garmin's own suggested retail price rather than below it, which is the opposite of what a superseded product usually does.
If you already own one, keep it — it produces the same six running metrics and runs on a coin cell. We are simply not going to point a buy button at an older sensor selling for more than the newer one.
What a strap does not fix on a Garmin
Workout heart rate, your zones, and everything computed from them improve the moment the strap is paired. Sleep staging, overnight resting heart rate, Body Battery, training status and VO2 max do not — those come from the watch's own sensor and the watch's own models, and the strap is not on you at 3 a.m.
It is worth being blunt about the state of the evidence there. There is no published polysomnography validation of Garmin sleep staging for any Garmin device, and no published validation of any manufacturer's training-status or recovery model. In the one study that compared five wearables against ECG across 536 nights, a Garmin fēnix 6 finished behind both Oura rings on overnight heart rate and HRV. Our HRV accuracy scoreboard lists all of it, including the rows where the answer is that nothing has been measured.
So: a strap is the highest-value upgrade available to a Garmin owner, and it fixes one category of measurement rather than all of them. Anyone selling it as a cure for your readiness score is selling you something.
One sensor, a watch and a bike computer at the same time
This is where Garmin owners come out ahead of everyone else. ANT+ is a broadcast protocol: the sensor transmits and any number of receivers can listen at once, so a watch, an Edge head unit and a gym treadmill can all read the same strap simultaneously. Bluetooth generally holds one connection at a time, which is why a strap already paired to a phone app vanishes from the watch's list.
The practical rule on a Garmin: pair over ANT+ unless you have a specific reason not to. It leaves the sensor available to everything else in the room, and — as above — it is the only way the running dynamics arrive at all. Getting it right on a Garmin watch
- Pair over ANT+, not Bluetooth. Same sensor, same heart rate — but running dynamics and pace-without-GPS only travel on the ANT+ side, and ANT+ leaves the sensor free for your Edge and the gym equipment at the same time.
- Wet the electrodes before you put it on. Every chest strap manufacturer instructs this and most people skip it. Dry electrodes are the most common cause of the wild first-mile readings people blame on the sensor.
- Position it below the pectoral muscles, snug. Tight enough that it does not slide when you jump, loose enough that you forget it is there. If it moves, it reads badly.
- Replace the belt, not the pod. Fabric belts stretch and their electrodes wash out long before the transmitter fails, and a belt costs a fraction of a sensor.
- Check the watch is actually using it. Once paired, the watch should show the external sensor as the heart rate source for the activity. If it is still reading your wrist, you have bought an accessory and changed nothing.

What keeps a strap reading cleanly on any watch
Not ranked and not scored — maintenance items sit outside the rubric because there is no validation literature for a replacement belt. Each one cites the manufacturer instruction it rests on.

Replacement chest-strap belt
A strap that has stretched, or whose electrodes have washed out.
Polar says it plainly on its own troubleshooting page: the chest strap "doesn't last forever; it wears out like any other garment you regularly wear and wash". The transmitter pod outlives the belt, and the belt is the cheap half. Polar support: unusual heart rate readings.

Conductive electrode gel
The spiky, nonsense heart rate over the first ten minutes of a run.
Polar's instruction is to "moisten the electrode area of the strap thoroughly under tap water before training". Gel is the same fix that does not evaporate in the first mile — which is precisely when the dropouts happen, because the strap has not warmed up and you have not started sweating yet. The linked tube is axion's 8.5 oz electrode gel, sold for TENS and EMS pads rather than for chest straps — the listing describes it as hypoallergenic, odorless and suitable for all types of self-adhesive electrodes. Nothing in this category is sold specifically for heart-rate straps, so check the ingredients if your skin reacts to anything.

Panasonic CR2025 coin cells
Dropouts and lost range from a sensor battery nobody has changed.
A weak cell does not fail cleanly. Polar states that "if the battery is running low, the transmission range decreases which may cause errors in heart rate readings" — so it degrades into bad data rather than into no data, which is the harder failure to notice. The H10 manual specifies a CR2025 and names Panasonic and Maxell as the brands it has found reliable. Polar H10 manual: batteries.
CR2025 is the cell for the Polar H10 and H9. Garmin's straps and other brands differ — check your own manual before ordering.

Does the Polar H10 work with a Garmin watch?
Yes. The H10 broadcasts on ANT+ and Bluetooth, and Garmin watches accept both, so it pairs like any Garmin strap and the watch uses it in place of the wrist sensor for the activity. You do not get running dynamics from it — those are computed by an accelerometer inside Garmin's own sensors.
Which heart rate monitor is most accurate with a Garmin watch?
The Polar H10, on the published record. It is the sensor researchers use as the criterion measure — including in the 2025 placement study cited across this site — and being the yardstick other devices are measured against is a stronger claim than any manufacturer accuracy figure. No Garmin strap has an independent validation we could find.
Do I need a Garmin strap to get running dynamics?
Yes, and it has to be connected over ANT+. Garmin's manual states that running dynamics require the sensor to be paired to a compatible Garmin device using ANT+ technology. A third-party strap sends heart rate and nothing else; the same Garmin sensor on a Bluetooth connection also sends heart rate and nothing else.
Is the HRM 600 more accurate than the HRM 200 or the Polar H10?
There is no published evidence that it is. All three measure electrically through the chest, which is the right physical principle, and only the H10 has an evidentiary record behind it. What the HRM 600 buys you is running dynamics including step speed loss, a rechargeable battery and a 5 ATM rating — capability, not measured accuracy.
Will a strap improve my Garmin sleep score or Body Battery?
No. Those come from the watch's own sensor overnight and from Garmin's own models, neither of which a strap touches. There is no published polysomnography validation of Garmin sleep staging on any device, and none of any manufacturer's recovery model. A strap fixes workout heart rate and everything derived from it.
What about the Garmin HRM-Pro Plus?
Still sold, and deliberately not ranked here. Garmin's own current heart rate monitor guide lists the HRM 200, the HRM-Fit and the HRM 600 and does not include it, and the live Amazon listing we resolved sat above Garmin's suggested retail price rather than below it. Keep yours if you own one; we will not point a buy button at it.

Manufacturer-stated, read 2026-08-26: user-replaceable CR2032 3 V cell, battery life “Up to 1 yr. at 1 hr./day”, 3 ATM water resistance (“the device withstands pressure equivalent to a depth of 30 m”), operating range 0 to 40 °C, 2.4 GHz radio at 8 dBm maximum. The 3 ATM figure matters: Garmin rates its own chest straps at 5 ATM, so this is the one specification on which the clip-on sits below them.

Manufacturer-stated, read 2026-08-26. Garmin’s own note is why this page is organized around ANT+: “To use the running dynamics features, the HRM-Fit heart rate monitor must be paired to your compatible Garmin device using ANT+ technology.” The same manual documents six running metrics (cadence, vertical oscillation, ground contact time, ground contact time balance, stride length, vertical ratio), running pace and distance when GPS is unavailable, heart-rate storage for timed activities out of watch range, and a sports-bra fitting specification: medium or high support, a flat band roughly 19 to 50 mm wide, no front zipper.

Garmin’s own buying guide, dated 9 September 2025 and read 2026-08-26. It presents three straps — HRM 200, HRM-Fit and HRM 600 — and attributes step speed loss, stride length, vertical oscillation and ground contact time balance to the HRM 600. The HRM-Pro Plus does not appear in it. Tiered as a manufacturer claim rather than a specification: it is marketing copy, and we use it only for what Garmin says its own current line-up is.

Authors’ stated limits: healthy adults only, no atrial-fibrillation population, proprietary and periodically-updated algorithms, and unequal night counts per device. The Garmin was dropped from the resting-heart-rate comparison because the 30-minute window it uses is not timestamped.
