Buy the Polar H10. It pairs over Bluetooth, which is the only protocol an Apple Watch supports, and it is the sensor used as the reference standard in the peer-reviewed studies this site cites. Why bother, when the watch already measures heart rate
Because of where the sensor is, not whose logo is on it. In a 2025 study, 28 people wore three identical optical sensors simultaneously at wrist, forearm and upper arm against a Polar H10 chest strap, through rest, a cycling warm-up, burpees and a treadmill protocol. Proximal placements won at every intensity. During burpees, every optical device fell below 0.50 concordance, and a wrist-worn watch in that study showed a bias of roughly 33 bpm.
That is a physics problem — motion, tendon movement and blood-flow changes at the wrist — and no firmware update fixes it. It applies to an Apple Watch exactly as it applies to a Garmin. Pair an external sensor and the watch uses that signal in place of its own.
The Apple-specific constraint: Bluetooth only
Apple Watch has no ANT+ radio. Any strap that broadcasts only on ANT+ is irrelevant to you, and any dual-protocol strap simply connects over its Bluetooth side. That is the whole compatibility story, and it is why this list looks different from our general chest-strap ranking. One practical note that catches people out: Bluetooth sensors generally hold one connection at a time. If your strap is already paired to your phone, your watch may not see it. The Wahoo TRACKR is the exception in our roster, publishing support for up to three simultaneous Bluetooth connections.

Electrical measurement reads the heart's own signal; optical measurement infers rate from light bounced off tissue. That difference is why the chest straps sit at the top of this ranking, and why the H10 — not any watch — is what researchers strap on when they need ground truth.
The honest case for the armband instead
A chest strap you do not wear measures nothing. If you know you will not use one, the Verity Sense is the better purchase: it was the forearm device in the 2025 placement study, it records on board so it can work without a live connection, and forearm placement beat the wrist at every intensity tested. The TICKR FIT exploits the same placement principle more cheaply, but it is the device that was not in the study.
What this does not fix
Sleep staging and VO2 max stay exactly as they were — those come from the watch's own models, not from the strap. On Apple's platform both have been measured and neither result is flattering: 50.5% deep-sleep sensitivity against polysomnography for a Series 8, and VO2 max underestimated by 6.07 mL/kg/min in a 2025 laboratory validation, with error growing as fitness rose.
A strap fixes your workout heart rate, your zones and anything derived from them. It is the highest-value upgrade available to an Apple Watch owner, and it is not a fix for everything.
What changes on the watch once a strap is paired
The workout uses the external sensor rather than the wrist optical sensor, so pace-and-heart-rate zones, calorie estimates and anything derived from heart rate improve together. Your resting heart rate, sleep tracking and background measurements continue to come from the watch, because the strap is not on you overnight.
That split is worth understanding before buying, because it defines what a strap can and cannot fix. Workout heart rate: fixed, and it is the measurement with the strongest published evidence of being broken at the wrist. Sleep staging and VO2 max: unchanged, and both carry unflattering published results on Apple's platform.
One strap, several devices
Most Bluetooth sensors hold a single connection, which is why a strap paired to a phone app vanishes from the watch list. Two ways around it: choose a dual-protocol strap and let the bike computer take the ANT+ broadcast while the Apple Watch takes Bluetooth, or choose the Wahoo TRACKR, which publishes support for three simultaneous Bluetooth links.

Setting it up so it actually works
- Pair from the watch, not the phone. If the strap is connected to a phone app, disconnect it there first — most Bluetooth sensors hold one link at a time.
- Wet the electrodes. Every chest-strap maker says this and most people skip it. Dry electrodes are the single most common cause of the wild first-five-minutes readings people blame on the strap.
- Position matters. The strap sits directly below the pectoral muscles, snug enough that it does not slide when you jump.
- Replace the belt, not the pod. Fabric belts wear out long before the sensor does, and a stretched belt reads badly.

Replacement chest-strap belt
A strap that has stretched, or whose electrodes have washed out.
Polar says it plainly on its own troubleshooting page: the chest strap "doesn't last forever; it wears out like any other garment you regularly wear and wash". The transmitter pod outlives the belt, and the belt is the cheap half. Polar support: unusual heart rate readings.

Conductive electrode gel
The spiky, nonsense heart rate over the first ten minutes of a run.
Polar's instruction is to "moisten the electrode area of the strap thoroughly under tap water before training". Gel is the same fix that does not evaporate in the first mile — which is precisely when the dropouts happen, because the strap has not warmed up and you have not started sweating yet. Polar support: unusual heart rate readings.
The linked tube is axion's 8.5 oz electrode gel, sold for TENS and EMS pads rather than for chest straps — the listing describes it as hypoallergenic, odorless and suitable for all types of self-adhesive electrodes. Nothing in this category is sold specifically for heart-rate straps, so check the ingredients if your skin reacts to anything.

Panasonic CR2025 coin cells
Dropouts and lost range from a sensor battery nobody has changed.
A weak cell does not fail cleanly. Polar states that "if the battery is running low, the transmission range decreases which may cause errors in heart rate readings" — so it degrades into bad data rather than into no data, which is the harder failure to notice. The H10 manual specifies a CR2025 and names Panasonic and Maxell as the brands it has found reliable. Polar H10 manual: batteries.
CR2025 is the cell for the Polar H10 and H9. Garmin's straps and other brands differ — check your own manual before ordering.

Does a chest strap work with Apple Watch?
Yes, over Bluetooth. Apple Watch has no ANT+ support, so a dual-protocol strap such as the Polar H10 simply connects on its Bluetooth side, and the watch uses it in place of its own wrist sensor for the workout.
Which heart rate monitor is most accurate with an Apple Watch?
The Polar H10, on the published record — it is the sensor researchers use as the reference standard, including in the 2025 placement study we cite throughout this site. Being the yardstick other devices are measured against is a stronger claim than any manufacturer accuracy figure.
Is an armband as good as a chest strap?
Close, and better than the wrist. In the 2025 study, forearm and upper-arm placements outperformed the wrist at every intensity, though the chest strap remained the reference. If you will wear an armband and will not wear a strap, the armband is the better buy.
Will a strap improve my Apple Watch sleep or VO2 max data?
No. Those come from the watch's own models. The published record for Apple's platform is 50.5% deep-sleep sensitivity against polysomnography and VO2 max underestimated by around 6 mL/kg/min in laboratory testing. A strap fixes workout heart rate and everything derived from it, and nothing else.
