Chest strap compatibility: what pairs with what

The most common reason a heart rate monitor disappoints is not accuracy. It is that it will not connect to the one thing you bought it for.

The short answer

ANT+ broadcasts to unlimited devices simultaneously and is what most bike computers and gym equipment use; Bluetooth generally pairs to one device at a time and is what phones and watches use. A dual-protocol strap such as the Polar H10 works with essentially everything. Apple Watch is Bluetooth-only, and Peloton accepts Bluetooth.

The two protocols, and why the difference matters

ANT+ is a broadcast protocol. The strap shouts its data and any number of devices can listen at once — your watch, your bike computer, the treadmill, all simultaneously. Nothing has to "own" the connection.

Bluetooth LE is generally a paired connection. The strap connects to one device, and while it is connected other devices usually cannot see it. Some straps support two concurrent Bluetooth connections; most do not.

The practical consequence: if you ride with a bike computer and also want the data on your watch, you need ANT+, or you need a strap that explicitly supports multiple Bluetooth connections. This is the single most common compatibility disappointment, and it is completely avoidable by checking before you buy.

Which straps support what

The Polar H10 supports both protocols simultaneously and is the safe answer if you use more than one platform. The Garmin HRM 600 and HRM 200, the Wahoo TRACKR and the COOSPO H808S also carry both. The Polar Verity Sense armband supports dual Bluetooth plus ANT+, which is unusually flexible for an optical device.

Three things that go wrong, and their fixes

The strap will not pair at all

Wet the electrodes. A dry strap does not conduct, and this is by far the most common cause of a strap that appears dead. Water on the contact pads before you put it on solves it more often than any amount of re-pairing.

It pairs but the readings are erratic

Usually a worn or dirty strap. Detergent residue interferes with conductivity, so wash it without fabric softener and rinse after use. If it has had a year of hard use, replace the fabric strap before you consider replacing the sensor — it is a fraction of the price.

Only one device can see it

You are connected over Bluetooth. Switch the primary device to ANT+ if it supports it, and the strap will broadcast to everything else at the same time.

Compatibility gets a strap talking to your watch. These three keep it telling the truth once it is paired — and all three are things the manufacturer itself tells you to do.

  • Replacement chest-strap belt

    A strap that has stretched, or whose electrodes have washed out.

    Polar says it plainly on its own troubleshooting page: the chest strap "doesn't last forever; it wears out like any other garment you regularly wear and wash". The transmitter pod outlives the belt, and the belt is the cheap half. Polar support: unusual heart rate readings.

  • Conductive electrode gel

    The spiky, nonsense heart rate over the first ten minutes of a run.

    Polar's instruction is to "moisten the electrode area of the strap thoroughly under tap water before training". Gel is the same fix that does not evaporate in the first mile — which is precisely when the dropouts happen, because the strap has not warmed up and you have not started sweating yet.     The linked tube is axion's 8.5 oz electrode gel, sold for TENS and EMS pads rather than for chest straps — the listing describes it as hypoallergenic, odorless and suitable for all types of self-adhesive electrodes. Nothing in this category is sold specifically for heart-rate straps, so check the ingredients if your skin reacts to anything.

  • Panasonic CR2025 coin cells

    Dropouts and lost range from a sensor battery nobody has changed.

    A weak cell does not fail cleanly. Polar states that "if the battery is running low, the transmission range decreases which may cause errors in heart rate readings" — so it degrades into bad data rather than into no data, which is the harder failure to notice. The H10 manual specifies a CR2025 and names Panasonic and Maxell as the brands it has found reliable. Polar H10 manual: batteries.

    CR2025 is the cell for the Polar H10 and H9. Garmin's straps and other brands differ — check your own manual before ordering.

Does the Polar H10 work with Apple Watch?

Yes, over Bluetooth. Apple Watch does not support ANT+ at all, but the H10 broadcasts on both protocols, so it pairs normally and the watch uses it in place of its own wrist sensor.

What heart rate monitor works with Peloton?

Any standard Bluetooth heart rate strap. Pair it from the Peloton tablet's own settings rather than through the phone app, which is where most pairing confusion comes from.

Can one chest strap connect to two devices at once?

Over ANT+, yes — it broadcasts and any number of devices can listen. Over Bluetooth, usually not; most straps hold a single Bluetooth connection at a time.

Why won't my gym treadmill see my heart rate strap?

Most commercial gym equipment reads ANT+, and a Bluetooth-only strap will simply not appear. Check that your strap supports ANT+ — that is usually the whole explanation.
