We do not print a Suunto GPS-hour figure in the same column as Garmin's 26 hours, because Garmin names the satellite mode on its figure and we have not been able to confirm the corresponding mode on Suunto's. Putting two numbers side by side without knowing they describe the same conditions is exactly how spec-sheet comparisons mislead, and it is the reason no cost-per-GPS-hour figure appears for the Suunto watches here.
For the Garmin flagship the arithmetic is computable: $28.67, from the live price and Garmin's stated 26 hours in GPS mode.
The evidence: an honest draw at zero
Neither brand has an independent validation of any current model that we could find. Not the optical heart rate, not the positioning. That is the whole finding, and any comparison that ranks these brands on "GPS accuracy" is describing spec sheets.
What separates them at the margin is what has been measured historically and how much each publishes.
Garmin has been measured once, and it lost. The 2025 Sensors placement study recorded a bias of roughly 33 bpm on a wrist-worn Forerunner 55 during burpees, the largest error in the paper. That is a cheap, older watch, and the finding is really about wrist optical sensing rather than about Garmin. But it is on the record.
Garmin appears in the HRV literature, also unfavorably. Dial et al. (2025) placed the fēnix 6 fourth of five devices at 0.87 concordance and 10.52% HRV error, and could not compare its resting heart rate at all because the derivation window is not timestamped.
Suunto appears nowhere. No study we could find has ever included a Suunto watch as a tested device. Under our evidence hierarchy that puts current Suunto models at the bottom tier, no validation study exists, which caps their score on the largest weight in the rubric.
It is worth being precise about what this asymmetry means. Garmin's measured results are unflattering; Suunto has no measured results. We score "measured badly" above "never measured", deliberately, because the alternative rewards a brand for staying out of the literature. Reasonable people could weight that differently, and the weights are published so you can.
Note the one exception across all brands: Polar carries a favorable peer-reviewed positioning result from 2020 that neither of these brands can match. If published positioning evidence is your deciding criterion, the honest answer is that you should be looking at a third brand.
What Garmin actually gives you for the money
Maps.Suunto's watches here have none. On unfamiliar trail that is the feature people miss first, and it is worth deciding deliberately rather than by price.
Third-party integration.This is the concrete, daily difference. Garmin Connect has the deepest ecosystem in the category — coaching platforms, analysis services, structured workout push, smart trainers. Suunto's is the thinnest of the brands we cover. Check the specific integrations you depend on before switching; this is where people get caught.
Specification granularity. Garmin publishes mode-by-mode battery tables — five separate GPS figures for the Instinct 3, each naming its satellite mode. That is not accuracy evidence, but it is the kind of disclosure that lets a buyer check a claim, and it scores on our rubric for that reason.
What Suunto gives you for the money
Screen size per dollar.The Race 2's 1.5-inch AMOLED is the largest display of any watch we cover and it costs well under the flagship tier.
Dual-frequency reception at a lower price point. This is the hardware that rejects signals reflected off buildings and canopy, and Suunto sells it below the tier where it usually appears. Whether you need it depends on your symptom.
Simplicity.Fewer features, less to configure. For a runner who records runs and looks at the data, none of Garmin's ecosystem depth is doing anything.
The verdict
Buy Garmin if you navigate, if you depend on third-party integrations, or if you already have training history in Connect. The ecosystem is the product, and it is genuinely the best in the category.
Buy Suunto if you want the most watch per dollar, do not navigate unfamiliar routes, and use your watch and its own app rather than a stack of services. You are accepting the thinnest evidence position of any brand here in exchange for real money.
Buy neither for accuracy. Neither brand can show you a measurement. If accuracy is the actual problem, a chest strap paired to whichever watch you own does more than any watch upgrade between these brands.

Is Suunto more accurate than Garmin?
Nobody can answer that, because no independent validation of any current model from either brand exists that we could find. Garmin has appeared in studies and the results were unflattering; Suunto has never been included in one. Anyone ranking these brands for accuracy is describing specification sheets.
Why is Suunto cheaper than Garmin for similar specs?
Mostly because you are not paying for maps or for the ecosystem. Garmin Connect's third-party integration is the deepest in the category and it is expensive to build and maintain. If you do not use it, you are paying for something you do not need.
Do Suunto watches have maps?
The Race 2 and Race S do not carry built-in cartography, while Garmin's Forerunner 970 and fēnix 8 both do. On unfamiliar trail that is the difference people notice first, and it is the clearest single justification for the price gap.
Suunto Race 2 or Garmin Forerunner 970?
The Garmin if you navigate or need integrations; the Suunto for a bigger screen at a lower price. Neither has independent sensor validation, so treat it as a platform-and-features decision. See the Race 2 review for the full write-up.
Which brand has the most accurate GPS?
On published evidence, neither of these — Polar was the only brand under 5% distance error in the peer-reviewed eight-watch study. That was 2020, on single-frequency hardware, so read it as evidence about Polar's receiver engineering rather than a verdict on any current model.
