The score beside each one comes from one published rubric applied to every product we cover, and the evidence chip tells you whether anyone has actually measured the device against a reference. We have not worn any of them, and we do not claim to. What we do is read the validation research, compile the manufacturers' own specifications, and show the arithmetic.

The budget line on each pick is computed the same way, so it tells you the truth on the day you read it.
Why a sensor, not a gadget
Here is the thing most gift guides in this category get wrong: the person you are buying for almost certainly already owns a watch, and the watch already records heart rate. What it does badly is record heart rate accurately when they are working hard. An optical sensor on the wrist is reading light bounced back from a joint that moves constantly, and in the best study we have on the question — 28 people, identical sensors worn at the wrist, forearm and upper arm at once, all measured against a chest strap — the wrist lost at every intensity tested.
That is the whole argument. A chest strap measures the heart's electrical signal directly, the same way an ECG does, and it pairs to any modern watch over Bluetooth or ANT+. You do not need to know which watch they own. You do not need their size. You need to know they train, and that they have ever complained that their heart rate "looks wrong" — which, if they train by heart rate at all, they have.
It also solves the gifter's other problem, which is that this is a category where the recipient usually knows more than you do. A strap is the one gift an enthusiast will not quietly return, because it is what the enthusiasts themselves buy. The picks, in gifter language
The one to buy if you only read one line: Polar H10
When researchers run a study of how accurate other wearables are, this is the sensor they measure them against. Being chosen as the yardstick is the strongest position a sensor can hold, and no other device on this site has it. It runs on a coin cell you replace rather than a battery you charge, it talks to a watch and a bike computer at the same time, and it stores a session on its own if they forget the watch. It is under $100 today. What to check before you buy: the strap size (Polar sells it in XS-S and M-XXL; M-XXL fits most adults), and that they do not already own one — this is the strap enthusiasts already have.
Same sensor, one fewer feature, less money: Polar H9
The H9 is the H10 without the on-board memory, so it cannot record a session on its own. If the recipient always trains with their watch on their wrist — which is nearly everyone — they will not miss it. It is under $100 today, and it is the pick when the H10 is out of stock or you would rather spend the difference on $29 worth of something else. Same strap sizing caveat.
For a Garmin owner who wants it to just work: Garmin HRM 200
If you know the recipient wears a Garmin, the HRM 200 is Garmin's own entry strap and pairs to a Garmin watch directly. It records heart rate and HRV and the strap is machine-washable. It is under $100 today. It scores below the Polars on our rubric because nobody independent has measured it, not because anyone has found it wanting — the honest position is that its evidence tier is "manufacturer specification" and the Polar H10's is "used as the reference".
For someone who hates coin cells: Wahoo TRACKR
The TRACKR is the rechargeable chest strap. If the person you are buying for is the kind who would never remember to buy a CR2025, this is the right strap for them, and it is under $100 today. The trade is that a rechargeable strap is one more thing to plug in, and no validation study of it exists.
For someone who will not wear a chest strap: Wahoo TICKR FIT
Some people simply will not wear a strap around their chest, and you may know this about your recipient. The TICKR FIT is an optical armband worn on the forearm — the placement the study found beats the wrist, though the study tested other makers' sensors there, not this one. It is under $100 today. It is an optical sensor, so it is an inference rather than a direct measurement, but it is an inference made where the physics is kinder.
The cheapest strap we are willing to list: COOSPO H808S
The budget strap. Electrical sensing, Bluetooth and ANT+, and under $100 today by a wide margin. It ranks last here because it has the thinnest evidence and the least-documented specification of the six, and we say that plainly rather than pretending a low price is a feature. If the gift is a stocking stuffer and the recipient is a beginner, it is a fair choice.
What to check before you order any of them
- Strap size. Chest straps come in sizes. If in doubt, buy the larger one; the elastic adjusts down further than it stretches up.
- Do they already own one? Ask, or look in their gym bag. An H10 is the strap most serious athletes already have. If they do, buy them the under-$250 guide's pick instead, or the replacement strap below — they wear out.
- Bluetooth or ANT+? Every strap on this page does both, so this is not a decision you have to get right.

If they already own a strap
Then the best gift under $100 is the thing that keeps it working. Polar says outright that a strap "wears out like any other garment you regularly wear and wash", and that a low battery "may cause errors in heart rate readings". A replacement strap and a pack of coin cells is an unglamorous gift, but it is the one a strap owner will actually use in January. They are listed below, outside the ranking, because accessories are not scored.

Polar says it plainly on its own troubleshooting page: the chest strap "doesn't last forever; it wears out like any other garment you regularly wear and wash". The transmitter pod outlives the belt, and the belt is the cheap half. Polar support: unusual heart rate readings.

Panasonic CR2025 coin cells
Dropouts and lost range from a sensor battery nobody has changed.
A weak cell does not fail cleanly. Polar states that "if the battery is running low, the transmission range decreases which may cause errors in heart rate readings" — so it degrades into bad data rather than into no data, which is the harder failure to notice. The H10 manual specifies a CR2025 and names Panasonic and Maxell as the brands it has found reliable. Polar H10 manual: batteries.

A spare or better-fitting band for the sensor placement that actually wins.
This is the accessory form of the strongest finding on this site: in the 2025 Sensors placement study, identical optical sensors moved off the wrist onto the forearm or upper arm beat the wrist at every intensity tested. Will a chest strap work with the watch they already have?
Almost certainly. Every strap on this page transmits over both Bluetooth and ANT+, and every current Garmin, COROS, Polar, Suunto and Apple watch accepts at least one of those. You do not need to know the model.
Is a chest strap really better than the heart-rate sensor built into a watch?
For exercise, yes, and the evidence is unusually clear. A 2025 study in Sensors wore identical optical sensors at the wrist, forearm and upper arm at once and measured all of them against a chest strap; the wrist lost at every intensity. A chest strap measures the heart's electrical signal directly rather than inferring it from light.
Which strap size should I buy?
If you cannot ask, buy the larger size. Strap elastic adjusts down comfortably; a strap that is too short simply does not close.
Why is the cheapest strap ranked last?
Because it has the least evidence and the thinnest specification, and our rubric weights evidence at 30%. It is not ranked last for being cheap — the Polar H10 scores highly on cost too. It is ranked last because nobody has measured it and its maker publishes less.
