The best HRV monitors, ranked against an actual ECG reference

HRV is the one consumer metric where a proper multi-device validation now exists. The rankings it produces are not the ones the marketing would give you.

The short answer

For measured HRV the Polar H10 is the answer, and its credential is that researchers use it as the ECG reference other devices are judged against. Among wearables you would actually sleep in, Dial et al. (2025) measured the Oura Ring as the most accurate — 5.96% MAPE against that reference — ahead of WHOOP at 8.17%, Garmin at 10.52% and Polar at 16.32%.

For once, there is real evidence

Most rankings on this site are built from specifications because measurements do not exist. HRV is the exception, and the reason is Dial et al. (2025) in Physiological Reports.

Thirteen healthy adults wore an Oura Gen 3, an Oura Gen 4, a Polar Grit X Pro, a Garmin fēnix 6 and a Whoop 4.0 simultaneously, every night, against a Polar H10 single-lead ECG sampled at 1000 Hz. Five hundred and thirty-six nights of data. Same person, same night, same reference — which removes almost every confound that makes cross-device comparisons meaningless.

Read the standard deviations, not just the means. Polar's ±24.39% and WHOOP's ±10.49% say those devices were not merely less accurate on average — they were less consistent night to night, which for a metric you are supposed to read as a trend is arguably the worse failure.

Why the chest strap still wins the page

The H10 is not in that table as a competitor. It is the table's ruler.

That is the strongest evidentiary position any sensor on this site occupies, and it is repeated: the H10 was also the reference in the 2025 placement study. An electrical sensor detects the beat itself and can time it to the millisecond, which is exactly what HRV arithmetic requires — the mechanism is worth understanding because it explains why the ranking looks like this.

The obvious objection is that nobody sleeps in a chest strap, and it is a fair one. The H10 wins on measurement quality; whether it wins for you depends on whether you want a morning readiness score or a genuinely trustworthy number from a specific session.

The Oura result, and its limits

Oura's numbers here are excellent — 0.99 concordance on the Gen 4 is about as close to the reference as a consumer device has ever been measured — and they arrive on top of the strongest sleep-staging result in the category, from the Brigham and Women's polysomnography study.

Two honest caveats. The study tested Gen 3 and Gen 4 rings, and the Gen 4 arm rests on 139 nights against the Gen 3's 470 — a smaller sample. And a finger is simply a better optical site than a wrist, which means Oura's advantage is partly anatomical rather than a claim about its engineering being uniquely good.

Note also what this does not transfer to. Our Ring 4 review and the Ring 4 versus Ring 5 comparisonboth apply the same rule: an unmeasured newer generation does not inherit a measured older one's result.

What HRV numbers are actually for

A single night's HRV tells you very little. The metric is meaningful as a deviation from your own rolling baseline, and it is influenced by alcohol, illness, heat, late meals and stress at least as much as by training.

This is also where the study's sharpest limitation applies, and the authors state it plainly: there is "little transparency into what metrics affect each device's own Readiness or Recovery Score", and those proprietary algorithms are updated over time. So a device can measure HRV accurately and still produce a readiness score nobody has ever audited. Accurate input, unaudited processing.

Buy for the measurement. Treat the score on top of it as a suggestion.

What the study could not tell us

  • Thirteen people. A large number of nights from a small number of healthy adults. The authors flag generalizability to sleep or cardiovascular disorders as an open question.
  • Nothing about daytime HRV. This measured nocturnal values only.
  • Garmin's resting heart rate was not comparable at all. The authors dropped it from that analysis because the 30-minute window Garmin uses is not timestamped, so it could not be aligned with the reference.
  • Nothing about the RingConn. It was not in the study, and no validation of it exists that we could find — which is why it ranks last here despite the strongest three-year cost figure on the page.

Sensors (2025) tested three Whoop 4.0 units simultaneously at wrist, forearm and upper arm against a Polar H10. Upper-arm placement produced the lowest error at warm-up and the best agreement in the burpee protocol; the wrist unit showed limits of ±10-19 bpm at warm-up. That was the 4.0, not the current model.

Choosing an HRV device

Decide whether you want a number or a score

A chest strap gives you accurate R-R intervals from a session you chose. A ring or band gives you an overnight value and a readiness score computed from it. The first is more trustworthy and requires effort; the second is effortless and includes a layer nobody has validated.

Check what the subscription really costs

Over three years the membership dominates the sticker price on two of these devices. The WHOOP listing is a 12-month membership, so its true three-year figure is $717; the RingConn charges nothing beyond the hardware at $299. That difference is larger than most of the hardware prices on this page.

Consistency matters more than the mean

For a metric read as a trend, a device with a slightly higher average error but a tight spread is more useful than one with a good average and a wide one. That is the strongest argument against the Polar result in the table above, and it is not visible if you only read the headline percentage.

Wear it every night or do not bother

HRV is only interpretable against your own baseline, and a baseline needs continuous data. A device you wear four nights a week produces a baseline that is mostly noise. Comfort and battery life are therefore accuracy features here, not conveniences.

Which wearable measures HRV most accurately?

Of devices you would sleep in, the Oura Ring — 5.96% MAPE and 0.99 concordance for the Gen 4 against an ECG reference across 536 nights, ahead of WHOOP (8.17%), Garmin fēnix (10.52%) and Polar (16.32%). The most accurate device overall is a chest strap, because a chest strap is what those measurements were made against.

How accurate is Garmin HRV?

A Garmin fēnix 6 measured 10.52 ± 8.63% MAPE with a concordance of 0.87 against a single-lead ECG across 150 nights — described by the study's authors as poor agreement, and behind both Oura and WHOOP. Separately, Garmin was excluded from that study's resting heart rate comparison entirely because the 30-minute window it uses is not timestamped.

Do I need a chest strap for HRV?

Not necessarily, but it is the most accurate option and the reference in every study we found. If you want a defensible number from a specific morning measurement, use a strap. If you want an effortless overnight trend, a ring measured at 0.99 concordance is a very good instrument — just remember the readiness score built on top of it has not been validated by anyone.

Is a smart ring better than a watch for HRV?

On the published evidence, yes, and the likely reason is anatomical rather than commercial: a finger is a better optical measurement site than a wrist. In the 536-night comparison both Oura rings beat both watches, and the gap was not small.

Can I trust a readiness or recovery score?

Less than you can trust the HRV number underneath it. The authors of the 2025 validation noted explicitly that there is little transparency into what feeds each device's readiness score and that those algorithms are periodically updated. The input has been measured; the model on top of it has not.
