The short answer
Oura has the stronger sleep evidence — 76.3% four-stage agreement against clinical polysomnography, the best of three devices tested. WHOOP has the stronger evidence for exercise heart rate, but only worn on the upper arm. If cost is the deciding factor, neither wins: a no-subscription ring costs dramatically less over three years.

They are not the same kind of product
Before the comparison: Oura is a purchase with a subscription attached. WHOOP is a subscription with hardware attached. You buy an Oura ring and pay a membership for the full app; you subscribe to WHOOP and the band comes with it, and it stops working when you stop paying.
That is why WHOOP appears on Amazon as a 12-month membership rather than a device — which is, to be fair to them, an honest way to list it.
The three-year arithmetic
This is the most underserved question in the category, and it is straightforward once someone actually does it.
The WHOOP Peak listing covers twelve months. Extend it to a three-year horizon at the same rate and the real figure is $717 — against the sticker price you see on the listing.
Then set that beside a device with no subscription at all. RingConn Gen 2 has an ongoing cost of exactly zero, so its three-year figure is simply its purchase price: $299.
The gap is larger than the hardware price of either device. Over three years the subscription is the purchase decision, and the sticker price is close to irrelevant.
The honest complication: RingConn has no published validation of any kind. So the cheap option is cheap partly because it has never been checked, and you are choosing between a measured device with an ongoing cost and an unmeasured one without. That is a real trade, and pretending the money argument settles it would be its own kind of dishonesty.
What each device's evidence actually covers
Oura: sleep staging, measured
Robbins et al. (2024), n = 35, single-night inpatient polysomnography. Oura Gen3: 76.3% four-stage agreement (κ = 0.65), 79.5% deep-sleep sensitivity, and no significant difference from PSG on seven of eight nightly summary measures. The best consumer sleep result published.
Caveats: one night, 35 healthy adults, and it tested the Gen3 rather than the Ring 4.
WHOOP: exercise heart rate, measured — with a condition
The 2025 Sensors placement study ran three Whoop 4.0 units simultaneously at wrist, forearm and upper arm. The upper-arm unit had the lowest error at warm-up, the best agreement during burpees, and treadmill concordance of 0.992. The wrist unit showed limits of agreement of roughly ±10-19 bpm at warm-up.
Which is a genuinely actionable finding rather than a marketing point: WHOOP's advantage is real, and it is conditional on wearing it on your arm rather than your wrist — something WHOOP's bicep band makes possible and most people never do.
Note also that this measured heart rate. There is no published PSG validation of WHOOP's sleep staging that we could find, despite sleep and recovery being the product's central pitch.

How to decide
Buy Oura if sleep is the reason you are buying. It is the only device here whose sleep staging anyone has independently checked, and it came first.
Buy WHOOP if training strain and recovery are the reason, and wear it on your upper arm. That is where its published result came from. Worn on the wrist you are giving up the advantage the evidence actually supports.
Buy neither if the ongoing cost bothers you. Over three years the subscription dominates, and a no-subscription ring costs a fraction as much — at the price of having no validation behind it at all.

- Any validation of the current WHOOP generation. The study tested a 4.0.
- Any validation of the Oura Ring 4 or 5. The study tested the Gen3.
- Any WHOOP sleep-staging validation at all.
- Any RingConn validation at all.
- Two further Oura papers, in Sleep Medicine and OTO Open, which returned publisher errors to our fetch. No figure from either is used anywhere on this site.

Skip this if
Skip this if you lift heavily. A rigid ring on a loaded barbell is uncomfortable at best, and Oura's own guidance is to take it off — a tracker you remove for training is not tracking your training.

For sleep staging, Oura — it is the only one with a published polysomnography result, at 76.3% four-stage agreement. For exercise heart rate, WHOOP has the published result, but specifically worn on the upper arm; on the wrist it showed limits of agreement of ±10-19 bpm.
What does WHOOP really cost over three years?
The Amazon listing covers twelve months. Extended to three years at the same rate it is $717. That is the number to compare against a one-time hardware purchase, and it is larger than most devices' sticker price.
Does WHOOP stop working if you cancel?
Yes. The hardware is part of the membership rather than a purchase, which is a genuinely different proposition from buying a device — and the main reason it scores lowest on cost per capability of anything on this site.
Is there a good sleep tracker without a subscription?
RingConn Gen 2 charges nothing ongoing, and Garmin devices do not require a subscription for sleep features. The honest caveat is that neither has any published sleep-staging validation, so you are trading measured accuracy for a much lower three-year cost.
