The short answer

COROS states 41 days of daily use for the APEX 4, the longest figure on this site. It uses a memory-in-pixel display, which is more readable in direct sun and duller indoors than an AMOLED. No independent validation of its sensors exists that we could find.

What a MIP display actually is, and why it changes the battery

Memory-in-pixel is a reflective technology. Each pixel holds its state without being continuously refreshed and it is lit by ambient light rather than by the watch. An AMOLED emits its own light, and every lit pixel costs power for as long as it is lit.

That single difference is most of why this watch states 41 days and an AMOLED watch of comparable size states ten. It is not a better battery so much as a screen that barely uses one.

The consequences run both ways, and they are not subtle:

  • In direct sunlight a MIP screen gets easier to read, because more ambient light means more light reflected back at you. An AMOLED in the same conditions is fighting the sun with its own brightness and losing.
  • Indoors and at night it looks flat and gray next to an AMOLED, and it needs a backlight in the dark. This is a genuine aesthetic downgrade, not a spec-sheet technicality, and we would rather say so than pretend the trade is free.

If you mostly train outdoors in daylight, MIP is straightforwardly the better screen. If your watch is also your everyday watch, worn in offices and restaurants, you will notice what you gave up several times a day.

What 41 days actually buys you

The practical value of very long battery is not the multi-day race that most marketing implies. It is that charging stops being a routine you can fail at.

The most common way sleep and recovery data goes missing is that the watch was on the charger at bedtime. A watch you charge monthly is on your wrist every night by default, which quietly fixes a data-completeness problem that no amount of sensor quality addresses. The same argument is why a 14-day watch beats a 2-day one for sleep regardless of which has the better sensor.

For actual long efforts, note that 41 days is the daily use figure, not a GPS figure. Continuous satellite tracking draws far more. COROS does not publish a full mode-by-mode table for this watch in the way Garmin does for the Instinct 3, so we do not compute a cost-per-GPS-hour figure for the APEX 4 — we would be inventing the denominator.

The COROS evidence position

No independent validation of the APEX 4 exists that we could find. It sits at manufacturer specification on our hierarchy.

There is one independent COROS measurement on record, and it is worth understanding precisely what it covers. The5krunner's measured 10-mile comparison tested the PACE 3 against a Garmin HRM-Pro Plus and a Polar Verity Sense and found its wrist heart rate diverged during and after rapid intensity changes. The author cautions the dataset was limited.

That test was of a different watch. It is not evidence about the APEX 4, and we do not present it as such. What it does mean is that the only time anyone independently measured a COROS optical sensor, the result was unfavorable — so "COROS sensors are fine" is not a claim anyone can currently support either. The honest position is that this device is unmeasured, in a brand whose one measurement was poor.

If wrist heart rate during intervals matters to you, that is an argument for a strap rather than an argument against this watch — the published evidence says placement beats brand, and no wrist optical sensor at any price solves the problem.

APEX 4 or PACE 4?

These are the two COROS watches on this site and they answer different questions.

The PACE 4 is 32 grams, AMOLED, with 41 manufacturer-stated GPS hours and 19 days of daily use. It is among the strongest endurance-per-dollar figures on this site and the lighter watch by a wide margin.

The APEX 4 is the larger, more ruggedized case with the sunlight-readable screen and more than double the daily-use figure. You are choosing a display technology and a charging interval, not a different class of data — and the same is true within the PACE line.

What we could not verify

  • Every battery figure here.COROS's own, under COROS's conditions. Nobody here has run one down.
  • Optical heart-rate accuracy. No published measurement of this model.
  • Positioning accuracy. No published measurement of this model, and no current multi-band watch of any brand has been validated that we could find.
  • GPS-mode endurance. Not published in a form we would rank, which is why no cost-per-GPS-hour figure appears on this page.

Who should not buy it

Anyone who trains mostly indoors or at night. You would take the duller screen and get nothing for it — the MIP advantage only pays in daylight.

Anyone who wants their watch to look like a smartwatch. This is a deliberately utilitarian device and the screen is the most visible part of that.

Anyone who trains by wrist heart rate on intervals. Not because this watch is worse than others, but because no wrist sensor handles that well and the only independent COROS measurement was unflattering.

COROS states 41 days of daily use, the longest stated figure on this site. That is a daily-use number, not a GPS number — continuous satellite tracking draws far more. Every figure here is manufacturer-stated; we have not run one down.

Is a MIP display worse than AMOLED?

It depends entirely on where you look at it. MIP is reflective, so direct sunlight makes it more readable, while an AMOLED is competing with the sun. Indoors the AMOLED is obviously better and the MIP looks flat. Outdoor training favors MIP; everyday wear favors AMOLED.

Is COROS heart rate accurate?

Unknown for this watch. The only independent COROS measurement we could find tested the PACE 3 and found its wrist heart rate diverged during and after rapid intensity change, on an explicitly limited dataset. That is a different device, so it neither condemns nor clears the APEX 4 — it simply means nothing here has been measured.

APEX 4 or PACE 4?
