The arithmetic that reverses the intuition
The reflex is that the cheaper watch is the value pick. Divide price by manufacturer-stated GPS endurance and it inverts:
- Forerunner 970 — 26 stated GPS hours — $28.85 per GPS hour
- Forerunner 570 — 18 stated GPS hours — $30.55 per GPS hour
The expensive watch is the cheaper one, per hour of the thing you bought it to do.
This does not automatically mean buy the 970. Cost per hour only counts hours you will use. If your longest session is ninety minutes, hours 19 through 26 are worth exactly nothing to you and you are paying for endurance you will never touch.
What the arithmetic does is replace an unanswerable question — "is it worth $200 more?" — with two answerable ones: do I navigate? and do I race longer than about twelve hours? Two noes means the 570. Either yes means the 970 and, per hour, you are not even paying a premium.
What the price gap does not buy
This is the part most comparisons skip. The 970 does not record better heart rate. It does not have a better GPS receiver in any way that shows up in a specification — both are multi-band, and SatIQ is a mode-switching optimization rather than a different chipset. Both run the same generation of optical sensor.
So if your reason for upgrading is that your heart rate data annoys you, neither of these watches fixes it. The published evidence on wrist optical sensing is consistent across brands and price points, and the fix is a strap. That path is worked through here.
The 42 mm case is an underrated reason to choose the 570
The 970 comes in 47 mm only. If you have a smaller wrist that is not a cosmetic issue: an optical sensor that does not sit flat measures worse, so case fit is a data-quality question. For some buyers this alone settles it.
What we could not verify
- Any accuracy difference between the two. No independent validation of either exists that we could find, so we cannot tell you whether they perform identically in the field — only that they share hardware generations.
- Real-world battery.Both figures are Garmin's, under Garmin's assumptions.

Is the Forerunner 970 worth the extra over the 570?
Only if you navigate or race long. It buys maps, titanium, an ECG app and eight more stated GPS hours. It does not buy better heart rate or better positioning hardware — both watches are multi-band with the same sensor generation.
Do the 570 and 970 record the same data?
The same core metrics, yes. The 970 adds the ECG app and mapping-related functions, but the pace, distance, heart rate and training-load numbers come from the same generation of hardware.
Which has better battery life?
The 970: Garmin states up to 26 hours in GPS mode and 15 days smartwatch, against 18 hours and 11 days for the 47 mm 570. Per dollar, the 970's endurance is also the better deal.
Is either more accurate than the other?
Nobody has published an independent validation of either, so there is no evidence-based answer. On specification they share a receiver class and a sensor generation, which is the most that can honestly be said.
