The short answer
The Oura Ring 4 ranks first: it is the only device here whose sleep staging has a strong published polysomnography result behind it. If you will not wear a ring, the Garmin Venu 3 gives you 14 stated days so it is not on the charger at bedtime, and the Withings mat removes the question entirely by going under the mattress.

Three things decide this, not one
Accuracy gets all the attention, and we spend a whole page on it at most accurate sleep trackers. But two other factors decide whether a sleep tracker is any good in practice, and they are barely discussed anywhere.
1. Compliance — will you actually wear it?
A tracker measures nothing on the nights it is on a charger. This is the quiet failure of sleep tracking on a sports watch: you charge it in the evening because that is when you are home, and you lose the night.
It is why the Garmin Venu 3's 14 stated days matter more than they look, why the Garmin Index Sleep Monitor exists as a night-only arm band at all, and why the Withings mat — which you never wear — has a genuine structural advantage no wearable can match. It records every night whether you cooperate or not.
2. Three-year cost, which is not the sticker price
This is the most underserved question in the category. Oura requires a membership for the full app. WHOOP is a membership — the hardware comes with it and stops working when you stop paying. RingConn charges nothing ongoing.
Take WHOOP Peak, sold on Amazon as a 12-month membership. The listing price covers year one. Add two more years at the same rate and the real three-year figure is $717 rather than the number on the box. Over that horizon the subscription is a larger variable than the hardware, and it is the reason RingConn scores 9.5 on cost while WHOOP scores 4.
3. Sensor site, which is physics rather than branding
A finger is a better optical site than a wrist, and an upper arm is better than a wrist too. The 2025 Sensors placement study established this for heart rate by running three identical sensors at three placements simultaneously, and it is the same optical physics underlying overnight measurement. It is a real part of why rings do well here, and why Garmin built a night-only arm band.
What we could not verify
Sleep staging accuracy for the Garmin Venu 3, the Garmin Index Sleep Monitor, RingConn Gen 2, the Oura Ring 5 or the Withings mat. None has a published validation we could find. For the RingConn and the Withings mat in particular that absence is the most important fact about them, because a four-stage hypnogram nobody has ever checked is the main thing they output.
The Fitbit result we do cite is for the Sense 2, not the Charge 6. Fitbit shares its staging algorithm across the line, but that is still evidence about a sibling device and we score it as such.

Skip this if you lift heavily. A rigid ring on a loaded barbell is uncomfortable at best, and Oura's own guidance is to take it off — a tracker you remove for training is not tracking your training.

Frequently asked
Are sleep trackers accurate enough to be worth it?
For sleep versus wake, yes — 91-93% agreement with clinical polysomnography across the three measured devices. For four-stage breakdowns, be more skeptical: agreement ran 70.9-76.3%, and deep-sleep sensitivity as low as 50.5% on one popular device. Trends over weeks are more trustworthy than any single night's stage breakdown.
Which sleep tracker has no subscription?
RingConn Gen 2 charges nothing ongoing, and Garmin's devices do not require a subscription for sleep features. Oura requires a membership for the full app, and WHOOP is sold as a membership. Over three years that difference is larger than the hardware price gap.
Is a ring better than a watch for sleep tracking?
A finger is a better optical measurement site than a wrist, and the only device with a strong published PSG result is a ring. Rings are also more comfortable to sleep in. The trade is that they are sized, they are poor at recording exercise, and Oura's own guidance is to remove them for heavy lifting.
What about a sleep tracker you don't wear?
The Withings mat goes under the mattress and records every night with no compliance problem at all, which is a real advantage. The trade-offs are that it infers heart rate through a mattress — a fundamentally harder measurement — it has no published validation we could find, and it cannot separate you from a restless partner or a dog.
