The short answer
The fēnix 8 records essentially the same physiological data as a Forerunner costing a third as much, from the same generation of optical sensor and the same class of multi-band receiver. What the money buys is a case built to be hit, dive ratings, maps and battery. Those are real, and if you never test them you have bought a durability specification instead of data.

What the specification gives you
Garmin publishes a 47 mm AMOLED case, multi-band GNSS, built-in full-color maps, dive ratings, a speaker and microphone, and the widest metric and mode coverage of any device on this site. It scores 10 on metric coverage — the only device here that does — and 9.5 on hardware.
Multi-band is the part that changes recorded data. A single-frequency receiver cannot easily separate a signal that came straight down from one that bounced off a building or a rock face; a dual-frequency receiver hears the same satellite on two frequencies and uses the disagreement to identify the reflection. In cities and under canopy that is the difference between a believable track and a wandering one.
The rest of the premium is materials and modes. Both are genuine engineering and neither appears in the numbers the watch writes down.
The cost-per-capability problem
This watch carries a cost sub-score of 4.5, the weakest on the site, and the arithmetic behind that is not subtle. A Forerunner 570 uses the same generation of optical sensor and the same class of multi-band receiver. It records the same heart rate, the same pace, the same training load, from the same hardware family. The difference in the file at the end of the run is essentially nothing.
What you are paying for is the case surviving something the Forerunner would not, a map on the screen, and a longer battery. Priced as a durability instrument, the fēnix is fairly priced. Priced as an accuracy instrument — which is how it is usually sold — it is not, and our rubric penalizes it accordingly while still ranking it first in the multisport roundup, because coverage and hardware genuinely are best in class.
If your trail use is real and multi-day but your budget is not flagship-shaped, the Instinct 3 Solar outranks this watch on our rubric at roughly a third of the price — losing maps to do it.
What we could not verify
This section appears on every review here, and on this watch it is long.
- Heart-rate accuracy.No independent validation of the fēnix 8's optical sensor has been published that we could find. The sensor is current-generation and the spec is detailed; a specification is not a measurement.
- Positioning accuracy. The best peer-reviewed distance study available tested a fēnix 5X Plus in 2020 — single-band, two generations back, 3.2-6.1% error across eight watches. It cannot tell you how the 8 performs.
- HRV and recovery. The one nocturnal HRV validation we found tested a Garmin fēnix 6 and recorded a concordance of 0.87 with a MAPE of 10.52 ± 8.63% against an ECG reference — described by the authors as poor agreement. That is a two-generation-old watch, and it is the closest published measurement to this device that exists.
- Sleep staging.Garmin was absent entirely from the 2024 Brigham and Women's polysomnography comparison, so there is no published head-to-head against Oura, Fitbit or Apple.
- Stated battery.Garmin's figures, under Garmin's assumptions. We have not run one down.
- Dive and case ratings. Manufacturer certifications. We have not tested a case and will not imply we have.
Who should not buy it
Anyone who runs on roads and pavements. You would be buying a case rating you will never test and a map you will use twice, at roughly triple the price of a watch that writes down the same numbers.
Also anyone whose actual complaint is heart rate. The fēnix 8 reads optically at the wrist like every other watch on this site, and the published record on wrist optical sensing during intensity change is consistently poor across every brand tested. Is the fēnix 8 worth three times a Forerunner?
Only for the case, the maps and the battery. It records the same physiological data from the same generation of sensor as a Forerunner 570. If you do multi-day efforts in rough terrain, dive, or navigate unfamiliar routes, those things are worth real money. If you do not, you are paying for a durability specification that will never be tested.
Is the fēnix 8's heart rate accurate?
Nobody has published an independent measurement of it that we could find, so we cannot tell you — and neither can anyone who has not measured it. The closest published data is a nocturnal HRV validation of a fēnix 6, which found poor agreement against an ECG reference (concordance 0.87, MAPE 10.5%). Different watch, different metric, two generations back.
