What the cheap end of this market actually is
A heart rate monitor is one of the very few pieces of training equipment where the budget version is not a worse version of the physics. An electrical chest strap reads the electrical signal your heart already produces. A cheap strap and an expensive strap do the same thing to the same signal. That is genuinely unusual, and it is why this page exists as something other than a list of compromises.
So where does the money go? Look at how these five score under our rubric and the answer is uncomfortably clear. The Polar H10 scores 8.9 on this site and the Polar H9 scores 7.3 — but their hardware scores are 9.5 and 8.5, barely apart. Almost the entire gap sits in the Evidence column, which carries 30% of the weight: the H10 is the device published studies use as their criterion measure, and the H9 is a device nobody has published a measurement of.
That is the honest shape of this category. Spending more does not buy a better electrode. It buys a device somebody has checked.

None of the five records a session without a paired watch, phone or head unit. That is the clearest line between this page and the flagship tier: Polar states the H10 holds one session of up to 30 hours in internal memory, and no sensor here does anything of the kind. If you ever train without carrying a device, that feature is worth the upgrade on its own, and no firmware adds memory that is not physically there.
Why the H9 wins a page the H10 is not on
We deliberately left the Polar H10 off this ranking. It is the best sensor we cover and it wins the accuracy ranking outright, so putting it at the top of a budget page would make the page meaningless. The question here is what the next rung down actually costs you, and today the gap between the two Polars is $35.
For that difference you lose the on-board memory and you lose the studies. You keep the electrode design, the electrical measurement, the 400 stated hours on a replaceable coin cell and the WR30 water rating. You also gain something: Polar publishes a 5 kHz analog radio on the H9 and publishes no such radio on the H10.
The 5 kHz radio, and the one place it decides the purchase
5 kHz analog is the old gym-equipment protocol. Plenty of commercial treadmills, ellipticals and stair machines still listen for it and for nothing else, which means the cheaper Polar talks to more hardware than the expensive one. If most of your heart rate training happens on a machine you do not own, that is not a consolation prize — it is the deciding specification, and it belongs to the budget model.

Where the discount stops being free
The COOSPO H808S is the cheapest correct sensing principle on the site and it ranks last here for one reason: there is no validation of it of any kind that we could find. Our evidence hierarchy caps a device with no published measurement no matter how good the price is, and it should. The strap is not accused of anything — it is simply unchecked, and a low price does not stand in for a study.
The Wahoo TRACKR is the interesting middle case. It is rechargeable rather than coin-cell, which people either love or resent, and Wahoo states over 100 active hours plus up to three simultaneous Bluetooth connections. Three connections is a real feature if one sensor has to serve a watch, a bike computer and an indoor app at the same time. What it does not have is a published measurement, and it sits close enough to the H10 in price that the evidence argument is hard to answer.
The armband exception
The Wahoo TICKR FIT is the only optical device here, and the only one that is not a chest strap. It ranks where it does because the placement principle behind it is peer-reviewed while the device itself is not: the 2025 placement study moved identical optical sensors from the wrist onto the forearm and upper arm and found the moved sensors better at every intensity tested. The TICKR FIT exploits that finding cheaply. It is still an unmeasured device exploiting a measured principle, which is two steps removed from proof.
If you already know you will not wear a chest strap, buy this rather than nothing, and read the armband comparison before deciding which one.
What none of these fix
A cheap strap does not fix a strap you do not wear, and it does not fix a belt that has stretched out. The most common cause of nonsense heart rate in the first ten minutes of a run is a dry or worn belt rather than a cheap sensor — Polar says on its own support pages that the strap wears out like any garment you wear and wash regularly. Budget accordingly: the belt is a consumable and the pod is not.

How to spend the least and still get a usable number
- Decide whether you need on-board memory. If you ever train without a watch or phone, nothing on this page records the session. That single feature is the honest reason to spend more.
- Check what has to listen to it. Older gym cardio equipment usually wants 5 kHz analog or ANT+. A Bluetooth-only sensor frequently will not appear at all.
- Prefer a coin cell if you train long. A flat rechargeable strap mid-ride is a problem a 400-stated-hour coin cell does not have.
- Do not read a low price as a defect, or as a bargain. The physics is the same across this page. The evidence is not, and that is what the scores reflect.

The consumable half
The cheap things that matter more than which strap you choose
On a budget page these are not an upsell. A worn belt or a weak coin cell degrades an expensive strap into worse data than a cheap one, and every item here is justified by a manufacturer instruction rather than an opinion.
These are not ranked and they are not scored on the rubric — none of them has a validation study and none ever will. They are here because a manufacturer's own instructions say they change what your sensor records, and each one links the page that says it. How the actual ranking works.
Replacement chest-strap belt
A strap that has stretched, or whose electrodes have washed out.
Polar says it plainly on its own troubleshooting page: the chest strap "doesn't last forever; it wears out like any other garment you regularly wear and wash". The transmitter pod outlives the belt, and the belt is the cheap half. Polar support: unusual heart rate readings.

Conductive electrode gel
The spiky, nonsense heart rate over the first ten minutes of a run.
Polar's instruction is to "moisten the electrode area of the strap thoroughly under tap water before training". Gel is the same fix that does not evaporate in the first mile — which is precisely when the dropouts happen, because the strap has not warmed up and you have not started sweating yet. Polar support: unusual heart rate readings.
The linked tube is axion's 8.5 oz electrode gel, sold for TENS and EMS pads rather than for chest straps — the listing describes it as hypoallergenic, odorless and suitable for all types of self-adhesive electrodes. Nothing in this category is sold specifically for heart-rate straps, so check the ingredients if your skin reacts to anything.

Panasonic CR2025 coin cells
Dropouts and lost range from a sensor battery nobody has changed.
A weak cell does not fail cleanly. Polar states that "if the battery is running low, the transmission range decreases which may cause errors in heart rate readings" — so it degrades into bad data rather than into no data, which is the harder failure to notice. The H10 manual specifies a CR2025 and names Panasonic and Maxell as the brands it has found reliable. Polar H10 manual: batteries.
CR2025 is the cell for the Polar H10 and H9. Garmin's straps and other brands differ — check your own manual before ordering.

Is a cheap heart rate monitor accurate?
An inexpensive electrical chest strap uses the same measurement principle as the strap researchers use as their reference, so there is good reason to expect it to be accurate. That is not the same as knowing it is. None of the sensors on this page has a published validation study we could find, which is exactly why the Polar H10 outranks all of them on our rubric.
What is the cheapest heart rate monitor worth buying?
The COOSPO H808S is the cheapest electrical strap we cover and its sensing principle is correct. Buy it if the alternative is no sensor at all. If the number has to be defensible rather than merely plausible, the Polar H9 is the cheapest device here whose maker publishes a full specification sheet, and it carries a 5 kHz radio on top of the usual two.
Should I buy a budget chest strap or a budget armband?
Buy the strap if you do intervals or explosive work, where every optical sensor in the 2025 placement study struggled. Buy the armband if the honest answer is that you will not wear a chest strap. An armband you wear beats a chest strap in a drawer every time.
Do cheap straps work with Garmin and Apple Watch?
Generally yes, with one catch. Garmin watches accept ANT+ and Bluetooth; Apple Watch is Bluetooth only and has no ANT+ support at all.
