Why cycling is the easy case

Most of this site is about uncertainty — devices nobody has measured, rankings built from specifications because measurements do not exist. Heart rate for cyclists is the exception, and the reason is that the answer has been settled in the research literature for years.

When physiologists need a heart-rate reference to test something else against, they reach for an electrical chest strap, and specifically a Polar H10. It was the criterion measure in the 2025 Sensors placement study and again in the 2025 nocturnal HRV validation, where it was sampled at 1000 Hz as a single-lead ECG.

Being chosen as the yardstick is an implicit validation by people who had every reason to be careful. It also means the H10's own error is unmeasured — you cannot measure the ruler with the ruler — and we say that on the pick rather than pretending the credential is an error bar.

What is different about cycling specifically

Three things change the calculus relative to running.

Connectivity matters more. A rider typically wants heart rate on a head unit, and often on a watch and an indoor platform as well. That means simultaneous Bluetooth and ANT+ is not a nice-to-have — it is the difference between one sensor and two. Every pick here except the entry-level option supports both at once.

Wrist optical is worse on a bike than on a run. The wrist is weight-bearing on the bars, largely static, and often cold. Those are the conditions optical sensing handles least well, and the reason experienced riders abandoned wrist heart rate long before the research caught up.

Strap comfort is a genuine failure mode. Six hours in a jersey is a different proposition from a 45-minute run, and a sensor you stop wearing measures nothing. This is why the Verity Sense armband ranks second rather than being dismissed as a compromise.

The armband case, with numbers

The Verity Sense is the one optical device on this page, and it earns its place with a measurement rather than an argument. In the placement study it recorded the lowest resting error of any device tested — roughly 1.6 ± 0.8% MAPE — and on the modified Bruce treadmill protocol a bias under 0.1 bpm with a concordance of 0.997.

That is remarkable for an optical sensor, and the explanation is placement rather than brand. The same study ran three identical Whoop units simultaneously at wrist, forearm and upper arm; the proximal positions won at every intensity. Moving an optical sensor a few inches up the arm removes most of the problem, because the forearm is less mobile, better perfused and holds the sensor still against the skin.

The honest caveat is on the same page of the same study: in the burpee protocol every optical device fell below 0.50 concordance, the Verity Sense included. Nothing optical handles explosive, stop-start work. On a bike that matters far less than it does in a gym, which is exactly why this device ranks so highly here and would rank lower for a CrossFit athlete.

The H9, and what the cheaper Polar actually gives up

The Polar H9 is a genuinely interesting third place because the difference from the H10 is narrower than the price gap suggests, and it is a single specification rather than a vague "quality" step.

Polar publishes the same electrical measurement principle, the same 400 stated hours on a replaceable coin cell, the same WR30 rating, and three radios rather than two — Bluetooth LE, ANT+ and a 5 kHz analog transmitter that older gym cardio equipment actually listens for. What it does not have is internal memory. The H10 records a session on its own for up to 30 hours; the H9 records nothing without a paired device.

For a rider who always has a head unit running, that memory is a feature you were never going to use. For a swimmer, or anyone who wants heart rate from a session where the watch was not present, it is the whole point. We rank the H10 higher because it is the measured reference and because the memory is real, and we would not argue with anyone who bought the H9 and spent the difference on bar tape.

The budget option, and the honest problem with it

The COOSPO H808S is an electrical chest strap with Bluetooth and ANT+ for roughly a quarter of the H10's price. The physical principle is correct — it is the same class of measurement, not an optical compromise — and that genuinely matters.

What it does not have is any validation whatsoever. Under our evidence hierarchythat caps its evidence sub-score at 2.5 no matter how good the price is, which is why it finishes last here despite a perfect 10 on cost. We include it because a cheap correct-principle sensor beats an expensive wrong one, and we rank it last because "probably fine" is not a measurement.

What to check before you buy

Count the devices you want it to talk to

A head unit, a watch, a smart trainer, Zwift on a laptop. Bluetooth generally pairs to one device at a time per channel; ANT+ broadcasts to unlimited receivers. If you want the same sensor on a Garmin head unit and an indoor platform simultaneously, ANT+ is the protocol doing that work, and every pick here except the entry model supports both.

Coin cell or rechargeable

The two Polars and the Garmin HRM 200 use replaceable coin cells with 400-hour class endurance; the Wahoo TRACKR recharges. Rechargeable is tidier and one more thing to remember on a long weekend away. A flat strap 40 km into a ride is a problem a coin cell essentially does not have.

Wash the strap, not the pod

The single most common cause of a strap that suddenly reads badly is a dirty or dried-out electrode band, not a failing sensor. Straps are consumable and replaceable; the pod usually outlasts several of them. Budget for a replacement band before you conclude the sensor is broken.

Decide honestly whether you will wear it

This is the real decision. An ECG strap you leave in a drawer is worth precisely nothing, and a forearm band you wear every ride is worth a great deal. The published evidence supports the armband strongly enough that comfort is a legitimate deciding factor rather than a compromise you should feel bad about.

Do not buy a sensor to fix a wrist problem you can avoid

If your complaint is that your watch reads badly on the bike, the answer on this page is any of these six devices — not a more expensive watch. Wrist optical sensing has the same physical limitation in every brand and at every price, which the placement evidence makes unusually clear.

Why is my wrist heart rate wrong on the bike?

Because the wrist is the worst position for an optical sensor and cycling makes it worse: the joint is loaded on the bars, the hand is often cold, and there is little movement to keep the sensor seated. The 2025 study demonstrated this by running three identical sensors at wrist, forearm and upper arm at once — the further from the wrist, the better the result, with the same hardware.

Do I need a cycling-specific heart rate monitor?

No. Nothing on this page is cycling-specific; they are general sensors that happen to suit riding well. What matters for cycling is connectivity breadth and comfort over long durations, not a cycling label on the box.
