On measured HRV, WHOOP is ahead: 8.17% error against an ECG reference versus 10.52% for a Garmin fēnix 6 across 536 nights. On money it is not close — WHOOP's three-year cost is $717 against $290 for a Garmin Venu 3 you own outright.

These are not the same kind of product
A Garmin is a watch you buy. WHOOP is a membership: the hardware comes with the subscription, the band has no screen, and if you stop paying it stops being useful.
That difference matters more than any specification on this page, and it is the first thing to settle. Everything else is downstream of whether you are comfortable renting.
The measured comparison
Both brands appear in Dial et al. (2025), which is rare and useful — 13 participants wearing five devices simultaneously against a single-lead ECG across 536 nights.

WHOOP wins the HRV comparison, and Garmin's resting heart rate could not be evaluated at all: the authors dropped it because Garmin derives the figure from an untimestamped 30-minute window, which cannot be aligned with reference data.
Read WHOOP's standard deviation though — ±10.49% against Garmin's ±8.63%. WHOOP was more accurate on average and less consistent night to night, which for a trend metric partially offsets the win.
Both watches were previous-generation hardware, and neither brand's current model has been measured.
The placement advantage nobody explains properly
WHOOP has one genuine structural advantage over any watch, and it comes from the 2025 placement study: because the band is screenless, it can be worn on the upper arm.
In that study, three identical Whoop 4.0 units were worn simultaneously at wrist, forearm and upper arm. The upper-arm unit produced the lowest error at warm-up, the best agreement of any optical device during burpees, and a treadmill concordance of 0.992 — while the wrist unit, same hardware, showed limits of agreement around ±10-19 bpm at warm-up.
A watch cannot use that advantage, because you have to look at it. That is the strongest argument for the WHOOP form factor and it is rarely made in these terms.
The money, computed rather than asserted
The WHOOP listing is a 12-month membership, so its three-year cost is the listing price plus twenty-four further months: $717. The Garmin Venu 3 is $290, once, with no membership at all.
That gap will buy a Polar H10 chest strap, which measures HRV against the standard both devices were judged by, several times over. If the recovery number is genuinely what you are buying, the HRV ranking makes that argument in full.
What Garmin gives you that WHOOP does not
A screen, GPS, ownership, and a device that records workouts rather than inferring strain from heart rate. The Venu 3 states 14 days of battery, which means it is on your wrist overnight rather than on a charger — the practical failure mode of sleep tracking on a sports watch.
Garmin's honest weakness here is evidence. No independent validation of its sleep staging exists that we could find, and it was absent from the main polysomnography comparison entirely.
What WHOOP gives you that Garmin does not
A recovery-led coaching model, upper-arm placement, and a screenless band that disappears on your body. If you have tried structuring training around readiness and found a watch unhelpful for it, that is a real difference in product design rather than marketing.
Its honest weakness is that the coaching layer itself is unaudited — the same 2025 authors noted there is little transparency into what feeds any of these recovery scores, and that the algorithms change over time.
How to decide
Buy Garmin if you want to own the device, need GPS, or want one thing on your wrist. Buy WHOOP if recovery-led training genuinely fits how you train, you will wear it on the upper arm, and you are comfortable treating it as a subscription like a gym membership. Buy a chest strap if what you actually want is an accurate HRV number rather than a score.

Is WHOOP more accurate than Garmin?
For nocturnal HRV, yes on the one study that measured both: 8.17% error and 0.94 concordance for a Whoop 4.0 against 10.52% and 0.87 for a Garmin fēnix 6 across 536 nights. Garmin's resting heart rate could not be compared at all. Both were previous-generation devices, and neither brand's current model has been measured.
Is WHOOP worth the subscription?
That depends on whether recovery-led guidance changes how you train. The three-year cost is $717, computed from the live listing price plus twenty-four further months — several times what an equivalently accurate chest strap costs. The measured accuracy is good; the price is the argument.
Can WHOOP replace a running watch?
Not really. It has no screen and no GPS, so it cannot pace you, navigate, or record a route. It is a physiological monitor rather than a training computer. Plenty of people wear both, which is another way of saying it does not replace one.
Where should I wear a WHOOP?
The upper arm, on the published evidence. When three identical units were worn at wrist, forearm and upper arm simultaneously, the upper-arm unit produced the best results at every intensity tested and the wrist unit the worst. Wearing it on the wrist gives up the main structural advantage of a screenless band.
