Garmin Forerunner 570 vs 965

The older flagship against the newer mid-range — and on every number that decides a long run, the older watch wins.

The short answer

Buy the 965 if you want maps, music storage or long-run battery: Garmin states 19 hours in All + Multi-Band GPS and 23 smartwatch days against the 570's 14 and 11, with 32 GB of media storage against 8. Buy the 570 if you want the newer sensor generation, a 42mm case with the full feature set, or a speaker and microphone on your wrist.

The specification table

Both battery columns come from the watches' own Garmin manuals, in the same named modes, so nothing here is comparing a flattering figure against an honest one.

Why the older watch wins the numbers

Because it was a flagship. The 965 carries a bigger battery, a mapping-capable processor and four times the media storage, and none of that was reduced when it moved to the back catalog. In the mode that matters for positioning accuracy — All + Multi-Band — the gap is 19 hours against 14, which is the difference between a 100 km day finishing on the watch and finishing on your phone.

Media storage is the quieter gap and the more practical one. 8 GB fills faster than people expect once podcasts and offline playlists are on there; 32 GB effectively does not. If running without a phone is the goal, that row decides this comparison on its own.

Why the newer watch is still the right buy for some people

  • Case size. The 570 comes in 42mm with the same features. The 965 is 47mm only, and on a small wrist that is not a preference, it is a fit problem.
  • Speaker and microphone. Calls and voice control from the wrist; the 965 has neither.
  • Sensor generation. The 570 uses Garmin's newer optical sensor. Be honest about what that means here: newer, not measured. No independent validation of either watch's heart rate has been published that we could find.

The arithmetic

Per stated hour in the accuracy mode, the 965 costs $26.32 and the 570 costs $30.39— though note the 570 figure is computed against Garmin's GPS-mode number rather than its multi-band one, so it flatters the newer watch slightly. Today's sticker gap between the two is $47.

Neither watch is close to the COROS PACE 4 on cost per hour, which is the standing embarrassment of the Garmin mid-range and the reason our budget roundup reads the way it does.

Who should buy which

  • Long runs, maps, music without a phone. The 965, and it is not close.
  • Smaller wrist, calls from the watch, newest hardware. The 570.
  • You only run road, under two hours, with your phone. Buy neither at full price — a Forerunner 165 records the training data you will actually look at.

The long-run arithmetic, in race terms

  • Road marathon, four hours, music on. Both finish comfortably: the 965 states 8.5 hours in All + Multi-Band with music, the 570 states 8.
  • A 12-hour trail day. The 965 has 7 stated hours in hand in the accuracy mode; the 570 has 2.
  • A sub-24-hour hundred. Neither watch finishes in All + Multi-Band. The 965 does it in GPS-only (31 stated hours) or UltraTrac (34); the 570 does not, at 18.

That is the honest summary of a generation gap: the older flagship still does a job the newer mid-range cannot, and it does it because it was built one tier higher.

Buying a superseded flagship without getting burned

  • Check the variant, not the photo. Colorways and bundles list separately, and prices differ by more than the color does.
  • Price moves fast on back-catalog stock. The whole argument for the 965 is the discount, so the arithmetic on this page is worth re-reading on the day you buy — it recomputes from the live price every time the page is served.
  • Firmware, not features, is the risk. A superseded watch keeps its specification; what it eventually loses is new-feature attention. If you buy for what it does today, that is a non-issue.

01Maps and music without the current-flagship price

Garmin Forerunner 965

The previous flagship Forerunner, still on sale: maps, 32 GB of music storage and 31 stated GPS hours, usually for less than the 970.

Case
47mm, titanium bezel, AMOLED
Satellite
All + Multi-Band GPS
Battery (stated)
23 days smartwatch / 31 h GPS-only / 19 h all + multi-band
Maps
Built-in, full color
Storage
Up to 32 GB media, 5 ATM

What's good

  • Built-in maps and 32 GB of music storage — the two specifications that usually force the jump to a flagship
  • 31 stated GPS-only hours and 23 smartwatch days, both longer than the current mid-range Forerunner 570
  • A generation old, which in this category mostly means cheaper rather than worse

What isn't

  • No ECG app, no speaker or microphone, and none of the 970's newer running-economy metrics
  • Its stated multi-band figure is 19 hours — the mode you would actually run for accuracy costs it a third of the headline number

Skip this if

Skip this if you want the newest sensor generation or the ECG app. This is the previous flagship, and the honest reason to buy it is price, not capability.

What the evidence says

Manufacturer specification

Published specifications only; no independent validation of this model that we could find. Its sibling the Forerunner 265 WAS measured in the 2025 lactate-threshold study — same platform, same estimation models, different watch — and that result was poor. We do not transfer the finding onto this watch, and we do not pretend it is unrelated either.

02Most runners, most of the time

Garmin Forerunner 570

Same sensor family as the 970, $200 less, and no maps. For most runners that is the correct trade.

Satellite
Multi-band GNSS
Battery (stated)
11 days smartwatch / 18 h GPS (47mm)
Maps

Extras
Speaker and microphone, on-watch music

What's good

  • Records the same core metrics as the 970 — the data you get back is not a cut-down version
  • Two case sizes, which the 970 does not offer
  • Multi-band GNSS at a mid-range price

What isn't

  • 18 stated GPS hours is thin for ultra distances
  • No maps, so navigation is breadcrumb-only

Skip this if

Skip this if you race beyond about 12 hours or navigate unfamiliar trails. The battery and the missing maps are both real limits, and neither is fixable in software.

Questions

Frequently asked

Is the Forerunner 965 still worth buying?

On the published numbers, yes: 19 stated hours in All + Multi-Band GPS, 23 smartwatch days, built-in maps and 32 GB of media storage all beat the current mid-range 570. What you give up is the newer sensor generation, the 42mm option and the speaker — and none of those change what the watch records.

Does the Forerunner 570 have maps?

No. It follows a loaded GPX route as a breadcrumb with off-course alerts, but renders no cartography. The 965 does. Our guide to whether you need maps at all is the honest place to start, because this is the most expensive checkbox in the range.

How much music can each watch hold?

Garmin states up to 32 GB of media storage for the 965 and up to 8 GB for the 570. Both play through Bluetooth headphones with the phone left at home, and both publish with-music battery figures: 8.5 hours multi-band on the 965, 8 on the 570.

Which has the better heart-rate sensor?

The 570 has the newer one. Whether it is better is unmeasured — no independent validation of either exists that we could find. If heart-rate accuracy is why you are upgrading, the change that has published evidence behind it is moving the sensor off your wrist, not moving up a watch tier.
