Best running watches with music

Two numbers decide this category and almost nobody publishes both: how much music the watch holds, and how much recording time the music costs you.

The short answer

Buy the Forerunner 970 or 965 if you want music without a phone: Garmin states up to 32 GB of media storage for both, against 8 GB on the 570 and 265. Expect roughly half your recording time with audio playing — the 965 states 19 hours in All + Multi-Band GPS, and 8.5 with music.

The table that decides it

Every figure below comes from the watch's own Garmin manual, with the satellite mode named. Media storage is the specification that decides how much you can carry; the with-music battery row is the one that decides whether you finish the long run listening.

WatchMedia storage (stated)Multi-band GPS (stated)Same mode, with music

Forerunner 570 (47mm)Up to 8 GB14 h8 h
Forerunner 265Up to 8 GB14 h6 h

Why this list is all Garmin

Because those are the watches whose makers publish both numbers in a document we could read. Apple Watches play offline audio too, and plenty of runners are happy with that; Apple does not publish a with-music GPS-recording figure the way Garmin does, so there is nothing to rank it on except impressions. COROS, Polar and Suunto watches in this price range either do not store music on the watch or do not publish a storage figure we found.

That is a limitation of the published record rather than a judgment about the products, and we would rather say so than pad the list. If a maker publishes the figures, they will appear here.

Music is the most expensive battery feature you can enable

Look at the last two columns again. On the Forerunner 965, switching on music takes a 19-hour recording capability down to 8.5. On the 265 it takes 14 hours down to 6. That is a bigger proportional hit than switching from GPS-only to multi-band positioning, and almost nobody plans for it.

The practical rule: if your long run is under two hours, ignore this entirely. If you are running a road marathon with headphones, any watch here finishes comfortably. If you are out for eight hours or more, either carry a phone or accept that the watch will be recording silently for the back half.

8 GB versus 32 GB, in practice

8 GB holds a few hundred songs, or roughly a dozen podcast episodes at typical bitrates — enough if you sync deliberately before each run, tight if you do not. 32 GB effectively removes the decision. Since the storage figure is the main functional difference between Garmin's mid-range and its flagships in this respect, it is worth deciding honestly whether you are a person who syncs playlists every week.

A caveat on the cheaper Garmins

The Forerunner 165 carries on-watch music only in the Music edition — the standard version has none, and the two look identical in listings. If you are shopping at that price, check the variant name before you buy. We have deliberately left it out of the ranking above for exactly that reason.

The battery rows, restated as sessions

  • A four-hour marathon with headphones. Every watch here finishes: the tightest is the Forerunner 265 at 6 stated hours in All + Multi-Band with music.
  • A six-hour trail day with music for the first half. Comfortable on all four, provided you stop the audio when the battery indicator moves.
  • A twelve-hour ultra with music throughout.None of them, in the accuracy satellite mode. Drop to GPS-only and the 965's 10.5 stated hours is the longest on this page — and still short.

The general rule that falls out of Garmin's own tables: audio costs you roughly half your recording time, and the satellite mode costs you the other half. Choose one to economize on, not both.

Storage, in terms you can plan with

Garmin states up to 8 GB on the mid-range Forerunners and up to 32 GB on the 970 and 965. The practical difference is not the number of songs, it is whether you have to think about it: 8 GB means curating a playlist before each block of long runs, 32 GB means syncing once and forgetting.

If you listen mostly to podcasts, the 8 GB watches fill faster than people expect — spoken-word files are long, and a backlog of unlistened episodes is exactly the thing you want on the watch rather than the phone.

Every pick, and why

01Long-course athletes who want maps

Garmin Forerunner 970

The most complete running watch Garmin sells, and — counter-intuitively — the cheapest of the pair per hour of GPS you get.

Case
47mm, titanium bezel, AMOLED
Satellite
Multi-band GNSS with SatIQ
Battery (stated)
15 days smartwatch / 26 h GPS
Maps
Built-in, full color
Extras
ECG app, speaker and microphone

What's good

  • Multi-band GNSS with SatIQ — the current top tier of consumer positioning hardware
  • 26 stated GPS hours is enough for an ironman-distance day with a wide margin
  • Built-in maps, which the 570 does not have at any price

What isn't

  • The wrist optical sensor is the same class of hardware as the 570's — the premium buys features, not a better heart-rate signal
  • 47mm only; there is no smaller case in this model

Skip this if

Skip this if you never race longer than a marathon and never navigate. Maps and titanium are the entire difference, and neither changes a single number the watch records.

What the evidence says

02Maps and music without the current-flagship price

Garmin Forerunner 965

The previous flagship Forerunner, still on sale: maps, 32 GB of music storage and 31 stated GPS hours, usually for less than the 970.

Case
47mm, titanium bezel, AMOLED
Satellite
All + Multi-Band GPS
Battery (stated)
23 days smartwatch / 31 h GPS-only / 19 h all + multi-band
Maps
Built-in, full color
Storage
Up to 32 GB media, 5 ATM

What's good

  • Built-in maps and 32 GB of music storage — the two specifications that usually force the jump to a flagship
  • 31 stated GPS-only hours and 23 smartwatch days, both longer than the current mid-range Forerunner 570
  • A generation old, which in this category mostly means cheaper rather than worse

What isn't

  • No ECG app, no speaker or microphone, and none of the 970's newer running-economy metrics
  • Its stated multi-band figure is 19 hours — the mode you would actually run for accuracy costs it a third of the headline number

Skip this if

Skip this if you want the newest sensor generation or the ECG app. This is the previous flagship, and the honest reason to buy it is price, not capability.

What the evidence says

Manufacturer specification

Published specifications only; no independent validation of this model that we could find. Its sibling the Forerunner 265 WAS measured in the 2025 lactate-threshold study — same platform, same estimation models, different watch — and that result was poor. We do not transfer the finding onto this watch, and we do not pretend it is unrelated either.

03Most runners, most of the time

Garmin Forerunner 570

Same sensor family as the 970, $200 less, and no maps. For most runners that is the correct trade.

Satellite
Multi-band GNSS
Battery (stated)
11 days smartwatch / 18 h GPS (47mm)
Maps
None
Extras
Speaker and microphone, on-watch music

What's good

  • Records the same core metrics as the 970 — the data you get back is not a cut-down version
  • Two case sizes, which the 970 does not offer
  • Multi-band GNSS at a mid-range price

What isn't

  • 18 stated GPS hours is thin for ultra distances
  • No maps, so navigation is breadcrumb-only

Skip this if

Skip this if you race beyond about 12 hours or navigate unfamiliar trails. The battery and the missing maps are both real limits, and neither is fixable in software.

04Runners who want a measured device, flaws included

Garmin Forerunner 265

One of the very few watches on this site whose training estimates have actually been measured against a laboratory — and the measurement was not kind.

Case
46mm AMOLED (the 265S is 42mm)
Satellite
All + Multi-Band GPS
Battery (stated)
13 days smartwatch / 20 h GPS-only / 14 h all + multi-band
Storage
Up to 8 GB media, 5 ATM

What's good

  • Multi-band positioning and an AMOLED screen in a mid-range Forerunner, in two case sizes
  • It has actually been tested: in a 2025 study of 100 recreational runners, 23 of them wore a Forerunner 265 against fingertip blood lactate — more than can be said for most watches sold today
  • 8 GB of on-watch music storage, so the phone can stay at home

What isn't

  • In that study its threshold PACE estimate overshot the laboratory value by 25.78% on average, and it overestimated rather than erring low
  • Its threshold test also failed to return a usable result 34.8% of the time

Skip this if

Skip this if you plan to set training zones from the watch's own threshold test. The one published measurement of that feature says it overestimates by roughly a quarter, and no firmware note undoes a published result.

What the evidence says

Peer-reviewed validation

Lu et al., Frontiers in Physiology 16:1621996 (2025), tested 100 recreational runners against fingertip blood lactate; 23 of them wore a Forerunner 265 or 265s. Its threshold pace estimate carried a mean error of 25.78% and overestimated; its threshold heart rate was much closer, inside the 5.95-7.15% band shared by the three watches tested; and its test produced a usable result 65.2% of the time. The authors note the Garmin protocol required an ECG chest strap while the other two devices used wrist sensing. That is a peer-reviewed measurement of this exact model — unusual in this category, and unflattering.

What to check before you buy any music watch

  • Your streaming service must support offline sync to the watch. Storage on the watch is necessary but not sufficient; the service has to allow downloads to the device, and services change their policies.
  • Bluetooth headphones are required. None of these watches has a speaker you would run to, and pairing is per-device.
  • Budget the battery. Take the with-music figure, not the headline one, and then subtract for cold weather. Manufacturer figures are best-case.
  • Sync before the run, not during. Transfers are slow enough to be annoying, which is the real argument for 32 GB over 8.

None of this changes what the watch records. Music is a convenience feature and we score it under metric coverage, not accuracy — the rankings on this page are still the site-wide rubric, published at how we rank.

How this ranking was built

Every score on this page comes from one published rubric, applied identically to every device on the site, with the weights written down and the inputs shown. We have not worn any of these devices and we never say we have. Read the method and check us.

Questions

Frequently asked

Which running watch holds the most music?

Among the watches we cover, the Forerunner 970 and 965 — Garmin states up to 32 GB of media storage for both. The mid-range Forerunner 570 and 265 state up to 8 GB.

How much battery does playing music use?

Roughly half your recording time, on Garmin's own figures. The Forerunner 965 states 19 hours in All + Multi-Band GPS and 8.5 hours in the same mode with music playing; the 265 states 14 hours and 6 hours. Plan with the second number.

Can I run with music and no phone?

Yes, on any watch on this page, with Bluetooth headphones and playlists synced in advance. The constraint is usually the streaming service's offline support rather than the watch.

Does the Forerunner 165 have music?

Only the Music edition does. The standard model has no on-watch storage, and the two are easy to confuse in listings. Check the variant name before ordering — that ambiguity is why it is not ranked on this page.
