The short answer
For sleep and recovery data, Oura. Its previous generation is one of only three consumer devices measured against clinical polysomnography, and an Oura ring recorded the lowest HRV error of five wearables worn against an ECG across 536 nights. For training, Garmin — the Venu 3 records workouts a ring cannot, and you own it outright with no membership. Garmin sleep staging has never been independently validated that we could find.

What has actually been measured
This comparison is unusual on this site because real evidence exists on both sides — and it points in different directions depending on what you are buying for.
- Sleep staging.In a Brigham and Women's Hospital study, 35 adults slept one night with inpatient polysomnography while wearing three consumer devices. The Oura Ring Gen3 achieved 76.3% four-stage agreement and 79.5% deep-sleep sensitivity — the best of the three tested. No Garmin device was in that study, and we have found no published validation of Garmin sleep staging from any group.
- HRV.Five wearables were worn simultaneously against a single-lead ECG across 536 nights. Oura Gen 4 recorded 5.96% error, Oura Gen 3 7.15%, Whoop 4.0 8.17%, Garmin fēnix 6 10.52% and Polar Grit X Pro 16.32%. Garmin's resting heart rate could not be compared at all, because the 30-minute window it uses is not timestamped.
- Everything else Garmin does. Training load, readiness and body battery models have no independent validation from any manufacturer that we could find. That is not a Garmin failing specifically; it is a category-wide gap that nobody publishes.
Read the fine print on both results and they are narrower than they sound: the sleep study tested a Gen3, not the Ring 4 you would buy, and the HRV study tested a fēnix 6, not a Venu 3. We rank on what was measured, and we say what was measured.

The comfort argument nobody quantifies
A ring is worn all night without thinking about it; a 45-gram watch on a wrist is not, for a lot of people. Every sleep number on either device depends on the device actually being worn, all night, every night — and that is a compliance question, not a sensor one. If you know you will take a watch off at bedtime, the ring's evidence advantage is academic and its practical advantage is total.
The reverse is also true. A ring cannot record an interval session, cannot show pace on your wrist, and cannot pair with a chest strap. If one device has to do both jobs, that decides it.
The money, over the period that matters
Oura requires a membership for the full app experience, and Oura's own published pricing is $5.99 per month or $69.99 per year with the first month free. Over three years that turns the ring's sticker into $559. The Venu 3 is $290 — once, with no membership at all.

Who should buy which
- You want the best-evidenced sleep and recovery data. Oura, accepting the membership.
- You train and want one device. Garmin. The Venu 3 records the workouts; treat its sleep stages as unvalidated, because they are.
- You want both and can wear both. Plenty of people do exactly this, and it is the honest answer more often than either brand would like.
What each platform does with your data
Oura's value is concentrated in its app, which is why the membership exists. Garmin Connect is free, keeps your history, and exports in standard formats that third-party platforms accept — which matters more than it sounds, because a number you cannot export is a number nobody can ever check.
The HRV study makes that concrete in an unflattering way for Garmin. Its resting heart rate could not be compared against the ECG at all — not because the sensor failed, but because the 30-minute window Garmin uses is not timestamped in the exported data. A measurement you cannot align in time is a measurement nobody can validate.
If you already own a Garmin
Then the honest question is not which to buy, it is whether to add a ring to the watch you have. Wearing both is common and it works: the watch records training, the ring records the night, and the two never need to agree because they are answering different questions.
The cost of that setup is the ring plus its membership — $559 over three years — on top of hardware you already own. If that is too much, the cheaper evidence-backed upgrade is a chest strap for training and no change at all to your sleep setup, because a strap fixes the measurement that has actually been shown to be wrong.

Skip this if
Skip this if you lift heavily. A rigid ring on a loaded barbell is uncomfortable at best, and Oura's own guidance is to take it off — a tracker you remove for training is not tracking your training.

Is Oura more accurate than Garmin for sleep?
On published evidence, yes — but note what that sentence rests on. An Oura Gen3 was measured against clinical polysomnography and reached 76.3% four-stage agreement with 79.5% deep-sleep sensitivity. No Garmin sleep-staging validation has been published that we could find. That is not a measurement of Garmin being worse; it is the absence of any measurement at all.
Which is better for HRV?
Oura, in the only head-to-head we have read. Across 536 nights against a single-lead ECG, Oura Gen 4 recorded 5.96% error and a Garmin fēnix 6 recorded 10.52%. Garmin's resting heart rate could not be compared at all because its 30-minute measurement window is not timestamped, which is a data-export problem rather than a sensor one.
Do I need an Oura membership?
For the full app you do. Oura states that without a membership the ring and app still function but the insights and personal health data are much more limited. At the published $5.99 per month, three years of ownership works out to $559 including the hardware.
Can an Oura ring replace a running watch?
No. It has no GPS, no display and no workout recording in the sense a watch means it. If you train by pace or power, the ring is a recovery instrument worn alongside a watch, not instead of one.
