Buy a chest strap. The Polar H10 is the device researchers use as the ECG reference other wearables are measured against, and it costs a fraction of the alternatives. If you want an effortless overnight baseline instead, the Oura Ring measured closest to that reference — 5.96% error, 0.99 concordance — across 536 nights.

The symptom this page is for
Your watch or ring shows an HRV number every morning and a recovery score built on it. Some days it says you are recovered when you feel wrecked; other days it says you are strained after an easy week. The number moves and you cannot work out what it is responding to.
There are two separate things that can be wrong, and it is worth knowing which one you have.
Measurement error. The device is not capturing your beat-to-beat timing accurately. This has been quantified, and it varies enormously between devices.
Model opacity. The measurement is fine but the readiness score built on top of it is a proprietary black box. This has been quantified for nobody, and the authors of the best study in the field say so directly.
This page fixes the first. Nothing you can buy fixes the second.
What the evidence says, device by device
Dial et al. (2025) had 13 participants wear five wearables simultaneously against a single-lead ECG sampled at 1000 Hz, every night, for 536 nights. Same body, same night, same reference — which is why this comparison means something and most do not.

If your HRV comes from a Garmin or Polar watch, those bottom two rows are your situation. Sixteen percent error with a ±24% spread means the measurement noise is comparable to the physiological signal you are trying to read — which is exactly what "this number never seems to mean anything" feels like from the inside.
Step one: use the reference, not a device measured against it
The cheapest fix on this page is also the most accurate one, which almost never happens.
A chest strap measures the heart's electrical activity directly and times individual beats to the millisecond, which is precisely what HRV arithmetic needs. The mechanism is worth understanding, because it explains why this is not a marginal improvement over an optical sensor but a different class of measurement.
The practical catch is that you have to take the reading deliberately — typically a few minutes lying still after waking, into an app that computes RMSSD. That is a routine, and routines fail. Which brings us to step two.
Step two: if you will not do a morning routine, buy the best overnight device
An honest upgrade path has to account for what you will actually do. If a daily measurement protocol is not going to happen, a device that measures every night while you sleep produces a real baseline and a strap in a drawer produces nothing.
On the measured evidence that device is a ring. Oura's 0.99 concordance is the closest any consumer wearable has been measured to an ECG reference, and the likely reason is anatomical: a finger is a better optical site than a wrist. Its resting heart rate was also the most accurate of the five, at 1.67-1.94% error.
The cost is a mandatory membership, which over three years dominates the sticker price — our subscription-free ranking covers the alternatives, with the honest caveat that none of them has been validated at all.
Step three: the band, if the coaching layer is the point
WHOOP measured second of the wearables tested at 8.17% error, and it has one structural advantage no watch can copy: being screenless, it can be worn on the upper arm, which the 2025 placement study measured as the best optical position at every intensity tested.
Its weakness is money rather than measurement. The three-year cost is $717, computed from the live listing price plus twenty-four further months — several times what the strap at the top of this page costs.
What no purchase fixes
The readiness score. The authors of the 2025 validation put it plainly: there is "little transparency into what metrics affect each device's own Readiness or Recovery Score", and those algorithms are updated periodically without notice.
So you can buy an accurate HRV measurement. You cannot buy an audited interpretation of it, from anyone, at any price. Our advice is to look at the raw HRV trend against your own baseline and treat the score as a suggestion — which is roughly what a physiologist would tell you to do anyway.
One thing to fix that costs nothing
HRV is only interpretable against your own rolling baseline, and a baseline needs continuous data. If you wear the device four nights a week, the baseline is mostly noise and no upgrade will rescue it.
Wear it every night for a month before concluding the device is wrong. Alcohol, illness, heat, late meals and stress all move HRV substantially, and a month of continuous data will usually explain more of the variance than a new purchase would.

Skip this if you lift heavily. A rigid ring on a loaded barbell is uncomfortable at best, and Oura's own guidance is to take it off — a tracker you remove for training is not tracking your training.

Choosing between the three
Buy the strap if you want a number you can defend
It is the reference standard, it is the cheapest option here, and it works with whatever watch you already own. The cost is a daily routine you have to actually keep.
Buy the ring if you want a baseline without effort
Measured closest to the reference of any wearable, worn on the best optical site, and it works while you sleep. The cost is a membership that outweighs the hardware over three years.
Buy the band if recovery-led training is the whole point
Second-best measured accuracy, upper-arm placement, and a coaching model built around readiness rather than workouts. The cost is the highest three-year figure on this site.
Do not buy a watch for HRV
Both watches in the validation study finished last and second-to-last, and one of them could not have its resting heart rate compared at all because the derivation window is not timestamped. If HRV is the reason you were about to upgrade a watch, it is the wrong purchase.

Frequently asked
Why is my HRV so inconsistent?
Two possible reasons. HRV genuinely varies night to night with alcohol, illness, heat, late meals and stress — that is the signal, not an error. But if you measure it on a Garmin or Polar watch, the published measurement error is 10-16% with a wide spread, which is large enough to swamp the signal you are looking for.
What is the most accurate way to measure HRV at home?
An electrical chest strap, taken as a short morning measurement lying still. That is the reference standard researchers measure every consumer device against, including in the 2025 study that ranked five wearables. It is also the cheapest option on this page.
Is a ring better than a watch for HRV?
On the published evidence, clearly. In the 536-night ECG comparison both Oura rings beat both watches, with the Gen 4 at 0.99 concordance and 5.96% error against the Garmin's 0.87 and 10.52% and the Polar's 0.82 and 16.32%. A finger appears to be a better optical measurement site than a wrist.
Can I trust my recovery score?
Less than the HRV number underneath it. The study authors noted directly that there is little transparency into what feeds these proprietary scores and that they change over time. Buy an accurate measurement; treat the interpretation on top of it as a suggestion.
How long before HRV data is useful?
A month of continuous nightly data, at minimum, because HRV only means anything relative to your own baseline. Intermittent wear produces a baseline made largely of noise, which no device upgrade will fix.
